Mining engineering involves the science, technology and process of extracting minerals from the earth. Mining engineers design safe and efficient mines for removing coal and metals, and optimize mines for removing resources in the most efficient manner possible. Mining Engineers also help develop or improve mining equipment, and manage processing operations that separate and refine minerals.

Mining Engineering is concerned with the extraction and processing of ores containing valuable minerals or metals. To become a mining engineer, you need a thorough knowledge of general engineering principles, followed by the study of courses specific to mining and mineral processing. These courses are designed to cover a wide and diverse range of subjects in order to meet the challenges faced by the global mining industry. The program’s cross-disciplinary approach to mining is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of mining operations, improving the social impacts of mining, and increasing the efficiency of aspects of mineral extraction such as energy and water usage.

The mining and explosives engineering programs are offered under the department of mining engineering. The overall objectives of the mining engineering program are to provide a broad engineering education with strong expertise in mining engineering, a cultural foundation for the mining industry and a strong basis for future growth and development. These objectives are achieved at the B.S. level by providing education in basic sciences, engineering sciences and design, core mining engineering, humanities and social sciences.

Most resources that cannot be grown or harvested need to be extracted from the Earth by mining engineers. Mining engineers are involved in every aspect of resource extraction, applying science and technology to plan, design, manage, and optimize mining and mineral projects around the world.

The Mining Engineering program at the University of Alberta is the biggest of its kind in Canada, offering a broad-based program covering subjects ranging from surface and underground mining to physical and mathematical sciences. Our graduates are well equipped to compete and succeed in a variety of careers in industry and government.

Mining engineering deals with discovering, extracting, processing, marketing, and utilizing mineral deposits from the earth’s crust. The role of the mining engineer may be quite diversified, and the field offers opportunities for specialization in a large number of technical areas. The trained professional in this field is well versed in mining and geology and also in the principles of civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering as applied to the mining industry. With the present trend toward the use of engineers in industrial management and administrative positions, the mining engineer’s training also includes economics, business, personnel management, and the humanities.

Mining engineers find, develop, and recover the resources needed to support the daily needs of society from the minerals required to support our daily health to the materials used for roads, buildings, computers, cell phones among most other items used daily. The mining engineering discipline requires a broad range of basic engineering skills along with the ability to apply specialized technical knowledge in the areas of geotechnical engineering, explosives engineering, ventilation, mine power systems, automation and control, environmental engineering and extractive metallurgy.
