Located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the United States, Western Michigan University (often known as Western Michigan, Western, or WMU) is a public research institution. Governor Aaron T. Bliss founded it as Western State Normal School in 1903 in order to train teachers. In 1957, it changed its name to Western Michigan University.

Situated in the "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" category, Western University is one of the eight research universities in Michigan. The university offers 147 undergraduate degree programs, 73 master's degree programs, 30 doctorate programs, and one specialized degree program through its seven degree-granting colleges. The Western Michigan Broncos are the name of the university's Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) teams. For the majority of sports, they play in the Mid-American Conference. The campuses of WMU have about 150 buildings spread across more than 1,200 acres. There are five campuses of Western Michigan University in and around Kalamazoo, which includes the main campus in the west.
