In Springfield, Illinois, University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) is a public university. The Sangamon State University was founded by the Illinois General Assembly in 1969, and on July 1, 1995, it joined the University of Illinois system. In Fall 2022, 4,198 students will be enrolled at the University of Illinois Springfield, which offers 56 bachelor's degrees, 39 minors, 44 master's degrees, 1 doctoral degree, 37 graduate certificates, and curriculum leading to 6 ISBE endorsements. The university no longer only admits graduate and upper-division students; it now also welcomes freshmen, transfer, and undergraduate students.

Six miles south-east of Springfield, on 740 acres of grassland land near Lake Springfield and Lincoln Land Community College, sits the University of Illinois Springfield. Currently, the campus is divided into three distinct areas: the University of Illinois period, SSU Permanent Construction, and Legacy Campus.

For its more than 1,100 students, UIS provides four housing options. Four apartment courts, including Sunflower, Larkspur, CLover, and Bluebell Courts, can be found on the East Campus, one of which is reserved for family living.  Pennyroyal, Marigold, Trillium, and Foxglove courts on West Campus are home to 96 townhouses. Lincoln Residence Hall (LRH) and Founders Residence Hall (FRH) are the two residence halls available to first- and second-year students.
