A public land-grant research university with four campuses in New Jersey, Rutgers University is officially referred to as Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Rutgers was founded in 1766 under the name Queen's College and was connected to the Dutch Reformed Church. It is one of nine colonial institutions in the United States that were established before the American Revolution, the eighth-oldest college in the country, and the second-oldest in New Jersey after Princeton University.

There are four separate campuses at Rutgers: the Rutgers University-New Brunswick campus, which also includes land in Piscataway, the Rutgers University-Newark campus, the Rutgers University-Camden campus, and the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences campus. The university also maintains facilities elsewhere in the state, such as those for oceanic research at the Jersey Shore.

The largest university in the state, Rutgers is also a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant institution. Over 45,000 undergraduate students in addition to more than 20,000 graduate and professional students are taught by 9,000 faculty members in 175 academic departments. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools has granted accreditation to the university.
