The Pennsylvania State University, also known as Penn State or PSU, is a public land-grant research institution with locations all around Pennsylvania. Penn State, the sole land-grant institution in the state, was established in 1863 and began as the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania in 1855. Its main campus is located in University Park, which is part of the Pennsylvanian boroughs of State College and College Township. Aside from being a land-grant institution, it also belongs to space-grant, sea-grant, and, as one of only seven institutions, sun-grant research consortiums. There are two law schools at the university: Penn State Law in University Park and Penn State Dickinson Law in Carlisle.

Penn State University Park, the biggest of the university's 24 campuses, is situated in State College and College Township in Centre County, in the heart of Pennsylvania.  It is the most exclusive campus in the Penn State system, with a 49 percent admittance rate for undergraduate students. 40,363 undergraduate students and 5,907 graduate students were enrolled at University Park for the fall 2018 semester. Of those, 46.5 percent were women and 42.4% were non-residents of Pennsylvania.
