It was founded in 1851 to serve the then-historic Northwest Territory, making it Illinois's first licensed university. Northwestern University requires all undergraduates to spend their first two years living on campus. During their first two years, students have the option of living in residential halls, residential colleges, or special interest housing.

International students can choose from 83 majors, 55 minors, and a number of certificate programs at the undergraduate level at Northwestern University's 12 schools and colleges. Double majors and dual programs are chosen by about 72% of undergraduate students. For academic support, more than 50% of students participate in study abroad programs.
