The public research university, Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is focused on commerce and agriculture. 

Originally established as a normal school in 1911, the university now comprises eight undergraduate colleges and one graduate study college, collectively providing over 35 departments and over 300 degree programs.

Situated on 466 acres (1.9 km2), the campus comprises 234 permanent buildings with a total area of 3.1 million square feet (290,000 m2). It is located 1.3 miles east of Murfreesboro's downtown and one mile from Tennessee's geographic center. There are two apartment buildings and twelve residence halls on campus. Greek Row is home to chapter homes for six sororities and one fraternity, in addition to the residence halls.

The majority of the college's original structures are located in the western part of campus, including Kirksey Old Main, the oldest classroom building, and the early residence halls, Monohan, Jones, Lyon, and Rutledge Halls. The western portion of campus is home to athletic facilities such as the Murphy Center, the Alumni Memorial Gym, Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium, Reese Smith Jr. Field, and the university's tennis courts.
