Oxford, Ohio is home to Miami University, also known as Miami of Ohio or just Miami, which is a public research institution. Having been established in 1809, the university is the second-oldest in Ohio (after Ohio University, which was established in 1804) and the tenth-oldest public university in the country overall (ranked 32nd). The main campus of the institution is located in Oxford, and it also has regional campuses in West Chester, Hamilton, and Middletown, all of which are close by. Miami also runs the Dolibois European Center, an international residential school in Differdange, Luxembourg. "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" is the category in which it falls.

Miami University offers a liberal arts education. Among its seven schools and colleges are more than 120 undergraduate degree programs in architecture, business, engineering, humanities, and sciences, as well as more than 70 graduate degree programs in these fields. Miami was one of the first eight Public Ivy institutions, a collection of publicly supported colleges thought to offer instruction on par with that of Ivy League universities.
