In Erie, Pennsylvania, Gannon University is a private Catholic university. Approximately 4,600 students and 47,000 alumni attend Gannon University. There are 18 men's and women's intercollegiate athletics teams competing at the NCAA Division II level. The Diocese of Erie founded Gannon University in 1933 as the two-year Cathedral College. The institution changed its name to Gannon College of Arts and Sciences in 1944, after the then-Bishop of Erie, John Mark Gannon, who was instrumental in the institution's founding and growth. In 1964, the institution went coed, and in 1979, it was given university status.

The campus of Gannon University is situated in the heart of Erie, principally between Peach and Myrtle Streets and 3rd and 10th Streets. A doctorate branch campus in Ruskin, Florida, with a concentration on healthcare majors launched in the summer of 2015. In NCAA Division II, Gannon competes as a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Nine men's and women's teams are among the 19 Division II varsity sports that Gannon provides and are eligible for scholarships. Baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, water polo, wrestling, and competitive cheer are all sports that students play.
