Chicago State University (CSU) is a public university in Chicago, Illinois, with a preponderance of black enrollment (PBI). Originally known as the Cook County Normal School, it was a cutting-edge teaching institution founded in 1867. Eventually, the county gave up management of the school to the Chicago Public Schools, who transformed it into Chicago Teachers College (CTC). In 1949, Northeastern Illinois University was founded as a CTC branch campus. The college was first funded by the State of Illinois in 1951. After taking over management in 1965, the college became a comprehensive state college. It was renamed Chicago State University in 1967. CSU holds an accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission and is a part of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

In NCAA-approved sports, Chicago State University supports seven men's and eight women's teams. Basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track & field are among the sports played by men. Basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball are among the sports played by women. The Cougars are the name of the school's sports teams, and its colors are white and green. Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association is played in which CSU is a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
