A public institution in San Luis Obispo County, close to the city of San Luis Obispo, is called California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (often known as Cal Poly, or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo). Of the three polytechnics in the California State University system, it is the oldest.

Six colleges make up the university, which offers 39 master's and 65 bachelor's degree programs. With 21,447 undergraduate and 840 graduate students as of autumn 2020, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is primarily focused on undergraduate education. The academic emphasis is on fusing professional and technical curricula with the humanities and arts. The Big West Conference is where the majority of the university's athletic teams compete. An Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institution (AANAPISI) designation is possible for Cal Poly.

One of the biggest university campuses in the country is found at Cal Poly. It is the second-largest land-holding institution in California, with 9,178 acres. The main campus, two adjacent agricultural areas, and two parcels in Santa Cruz County are among the lands utilized for student instruction.
