Formerly known as the University of Paisley, the University of the West of Scotland is a public institution with four campuses located in the towns of Paisley, Blantyre, Dumfries, and Ayr in southwest Scotland, in addition to one in London, England. There are now 16,105 students enrolled at the university, and 1,300 faculty members are dispersed among four schools of study. The University of Glasgow is one of the institutions that collaborate with Crichton Campus in Dumfries to preserve it. 

The university has more than 100-degree programs available at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and the number of doctorate students attending is quickly increasing. In addition, it conducts research and provides consulting services to the business sector, ranking second in Scotland for the quantity of KTPs with companies. In August 2010, the university became a Skillset Media Academy. The University of the West of Scotland offers a number of degrees that focus on vocational skills and give students the chance to work in industry for a year, either domestically or overseas.
