Located in Reading, Berkshire, England, the University of Reading is a public research institution. As an extension college of the University of Oxford, it was established in 1892 as University College, Reading. In 1926, the university was granted the authority to award its own degrees. There are four main campuses in Reading. In the UK, Greenlands is located in Buckinghamshire on the banks of the river Thames, while the campuses on London Road and Whiteknights are situated in the town of Reading itself. It also maintains a campus in Malaysia's Iskandar Puteri. Since 2016, the institution has been divided into 16 academic schools.

Four museums, the main campus library, several interdepartmental libraries, and a botanical garden are all maintained by Reading University. The largest and most well-known of these museums is the Museum of English Rural Life, which moved from its previous home on Whiteknights Campus to a new facility next to the London Road Campus, closer to the town center. The Whiteknights Campus is home to the Harris Garden, the Cole Museum of Zoology, the University of Reading Herbarium, and the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology.
