The oldest of the six private universities in the nation is the University of Buckingham (UB), a non-profit institution located in Buckingham, England. It was established in 1973 under the name University College at Buckingham (UCB), and it began accepting students in 1976. By royal charter, it was given university status in 1983. Business, Computing, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, Medicine, Postgraduate Medicine and Allied Health, Psychology, and the Foundation Department are the universities' schools or faculties. A dean is in charge of each of these.

In the University, important humanities courses like politics and history are being taught as international studies degrees that integrate economics with humanities subjects like history. However, economics and English literature can be studied independently, as a single honors topic, or in conjunction with journalism, English language, or other relevant subjects. The chair of the Institute of Economic Affairs Academic Advisory Council is Martin Ricketts, a professor of economics and dean of the humanities.

While coursework is often balanced with tests as a means of assessment, certain degree programs at Buckingham Law, for instance, lay more emphasis on exams than coursework.

The university grants traditional degrees in a shorter amount of time than is customary. Instead of studying for nine terms over three, Buckingham students study for eight terms over two years, which allows them to complete a three-year degree in two years with additional instruction.
