In Bath, England, there is a public research institution called the institution of Bath. Following the Robbins Report, it acquired its royal charter in 1966 together with a number of other organizations. Bath's history may be traced back to the Merchant Venturers' Technical College, which was founded as a school in Bristol in 1595 by the Society of Merchant Venturers, together with the Universities of Bristol and the West of England. The university's main campus was purpose-built, created starting in 1964 in the modernist style of the time, and is situated on Calverton Down, a position overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath.

The main campus of the university is situated on Calverton Down, around 1.5 miles from Bath's city center. The site is small; a fifteen-minute stroll will get students from one end to the other. The library, a 24-hour institution offering computing services, information and research aid, as well as books and journals, is located in the core of the campus. Around the parade are several establishments, including eateries, pubs, and fast-food cafés. There are also two banks, a union store, two small supermarkets, and academic buildings.
