In Bangor, Wales, there is a public university called Bangor University. It was one of the founding organizations of the federal University of Wales and acquired its Royal Charter in 1885. Formerly known as University College of North Wales in its official capacity before becoming the University of Wales, Bangor, it changed its name to Bangor University in 2007 and became independent of the University of Wales. The University College of North Wales (UCNW) was established on October 18, 1884, with an inauguration address delivered in Penrhyn Hall by the Earl of Powis, the college's first President.
A substantial chunk of Bangor is occupied by the university, which also has a portion of its School of Healthcare Sciences in Wrexham. The Penrhyn Arms Hotel, an old coaching inn where the university's first headquarters were located, served as housing for both its 58 students and its 12 faculty members. It relocated to a new, considerably larger structure in 1911; this structure is now the original portion of the Main Arts Building.
