Located in Passau, Lower Bavaria, Germany, the University of Passau (Universität Passau) is a public research institution. Being the newest university in Bavaria, having been founded in 1973, it boasts the most up-to-date campus in the state. Still, its origins as the Institute for Catholic Studies go all the way back to the early 1700s. There are now 39 distinct undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered by its four faculties. The Bavarian State Parliament passed a resolution on January 1, 1973, creating the university.

In all of Germany, the University of Passau's campus is most likely unique. All faculties are located on one campus along one street, with the exception of the Department of Catholic Theology, which is located in the Old Town, and some offices in the city center. The sporting facilities of the institution consist of an athletics field featuring a race track, four gymnasiums, and a football field. Staff and students can take advantage of a variety of free sports courses given during the semester, such as rowing, martial arts, basketball, volleyball, football, and aerobics.
