Located in Magdeburg, the capital city of Saxony-Anhalt, the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (abbreviated OVGU) is a public research institution that was established in 1993. Nine faculties of the institution are home to roughly 13,000 students. Otto von Guericke, a physicist and former Magdeburg mayor, is honored with the name of the university. The university's primary focus areas of study are digital engineering, biosystems technology, disease prevention, neurosciences, and automotive research. Axel Ockenfels, laureate of the Leibniz Prize, is one of the most well-known teachers and alumni.

Being among Germany's newest universities, the university was established in 1993. The Technical University, University of Education, and Medical Academy were the three higher education establishments that formerly called the city of Magdeburg home. These establishments serve as the foundation of the University.
