Q. Is 70 a Good PTE Score?

A PTE score of 70 can be considered a fair effort, but its value depends very much on how the test is being taken. Scores are assigned to bands, with 90 being the highest possible score. Whether 70 is a good score cannot be decided one-sidedly.

There are two considerations: first, what does the target institution or organization require? Second, of course, you have to take into account your objectives and intentions in taking this test as well.

Yet, for most academic institutions, a PTE score of 70 won't make the grade. This is particularly true of top universities, which tend to establish even higher benchmarks so that entering students can be adequate to the language requirements for their courses.

If candidates score under 70 in these cases, more may be needed for admittance, and the test-takers need to reconsider their level of language capability or retake the examination.

On the other hand, some educational institutions and employers accept a PTE score of 70 as meeting their standards in language proficiency.

Test-takers should pay close attention to the admission or employment requirements and compare their scores with the average score of those who were actually admitted. If you can do better than this, then your odds are good; otherwise, think again.

At a professional level, 70 in PTE may be passed as satisfactory for some job posts--especially those where the English requirement is not especially high. Nonetheless, for positions requiring a lot of talking, thinking, and writing, employers may tend to favor higher scorers.

As a result, although 70 points, in general, indicates reasonable English proficiency, it is only adequate for some purposes or institutions.

Test-takers should carefully study the exact standards required by their intended institutions or employers and strive for performance at levels that can be accepted in those places on academia's ladder (or industry's proscenium arch) to which they aspire.
