What is Geotechnical Engineering

Go back

Geotechnical engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering that focuses on the behaviour and properties of Earth materials, particularly soil and rock, as they relate to construction, infrastructure, and environmental projects. Geotechnical engineers assess the geological and geophysical conditions of a site to determine its suitability for building and infrastructure development. They analyze soil mechanics, slope stability, foundation design, and underground construction. Geotechnical engineering plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and stability of structures, such as buildings, bridges, dams, and tunnels, by understanding the unique challenges posed by subsurface conditions.
