What is Bioinfomatics?

Go back

Did you know humans share 98% of their genetic material with that of a chimpanzee, around 84% with dogs, 80% with mice and even 60% with bananas? Insane right? But of course, it need not be mentioned how different we are from animals or fruits. Bioinformatics, an interdisciplinary field of science, made these calculations achievable. This field involves developing techniques and tools for understanding biological data, which, more often than not, are large and complex. It involves Biometricians collecting, storing and analyzing biological data to understand biological processes, health and diseases, and other science sub-disciplines. Biometricians are usually scientists trained in biology, mathematics or computer science, with an increasing understanding of health and diseases. This field of science uses biology, mathematics, physics, computer programming, and statistics and could extend to pharmacy, molecular biology, genetics, etc, to interpret and analyze biological data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the scope of Bioinformatics?

With our daily lives and habits undergoing radical changes, the increased risk of diseases forces us to know the unknown. With the progress of medical science, this is becoming attainable, but there is also a growing volume of biological data available to researchers, which continues to expand. New tools and technologies are needed to study such data and analyze it for the study of diseases and medicinal applications. This is leading to a growing need for biometricians.

Is Bioinformatics easy to study?

This field requires knowledge in various areas such as biology, statistics, and computing and can also extend to pharmacy, medicine, and other related fields. So, it requires individuals to have basic knowledge of the above mentioned subjects. In the future, depending on their interests and skills, developing a deep understanding of the subjects and learning how to apply them effectively will be necessary.

Which is the best country to pursue Bioinformatics courses?

Based on QS Rankings and THE Rankings, the USA is currently among the top countries for pursuing this particular course. However, because this career field is rapidly evolving, there are increasing opportunities to study and work in other countries

Which subject is best for Bioinformatics?

As this field is multidisciplinary, it requires knowledge in various areas. Therefore, no subject can be considered the best in this fusion course. Pursuing this course, students should study fundamental subjects like Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The scope of this course is vast; hence, it cannot be narrowed down to 1 or 2 best subjects.
