On July 1, 2020, we officially changed our name from Elmhurst College to Elmhurst University. The change more accurately reflects Elmhurst’s current educational profile as a comprehensive higher education institution offering undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and applied sciences, while anticipating opportunities for new programs and partnerships.

North Park University’s history and heritage reach back to a Minneapolis church basement in 1891, where classes in language and business gave Swedish immigrants the skills needed to prosper in America. With an offer of land in Chicago, the school moved to the North Park neighborhood which was then just beyond the city limits. Old Main, the first building on campus, was completed in 1894. Its cupola became a landmark for pilots to locate Orchard Field (now O’Hare International Airport). The cupola was the tallest point on the city’s north side. At various points in its history, North Park was an academy, a junior college, and a four-year liberal arts college. We became a university, with a theological seminary, in 1997.

Western Illinois University is a public institution in Macomb, Illinois, USA. It was founded in 1899 as the Western Illinois State Normal School to prepare teachers to work at grammar schools throughout the state. It became Western Illinois University in 1967.

Western Oregon University is a public institution at Monmouth in Oregon. It is ranked 45 in the Regional Universities West ranking by U.S. News (2023). The institution was founded in 1856 as a private institution while being integrated into the state framework in 1882 as a teacher training organization.

The Southern Arkansas University (SAU) is a prestigious public research and higher education institute situated in Magnolia City, Columbia, USA. The university ranks 93 in the Regional Universities South category (2022) by US News. Initially founded as the Third District Agricultural School (TDAS), it was established in 1909. Northeastern was founded in 1867 in Blue Island, Illinois, as the Normal School, Cook County’s first teacher training institution. Northeastern has a rich tradition of educational innovation and prides itself in preparing teachers and administrators who make a difference in Chicago. That tradition continues to this day and has expanded to include all of the University’s academic disciplines, allowing the University to fully embrace the community in which it resides.

Over the years, the name, location, and mission of the University changed, but the commitment to learning and teaching has continued from generation to generation. The University has not only changed and grown, but it has expanded to address specific urban needs. The Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies was established in 1966 as an important expression of the University’s commitment to inner city communities and especially to the African American community. Three years later, in 1969, the University’s El Centro location was founded with a special focus on service to the large, diverse and growing Latino community. In 1978, the University opened the Chicago Teachers’ Center to offer professional development programs for urban teachers and administrators. Most recently, Northeastern joined the University Center of Lake County in 1996 as a founding member of a consortium of public and private universities offering college-level course work in Lake County. To complete the picture, this mix of essentially urban locations and partnerships also includes the Gensburg-Markham Prairie, which the University acquired in 1973. Consisting of 100 acres of unspoiled Illinois prairieland, it is located just south of Chicago—a beautiful preserve for future generations to learn from and enjoy.

This rich history tracks the dynamic growth of the city and the region. While keeping faith with its original mission—to provide an important resource for students from Illinois—today Northeastern attracts students from all over the world and is poised to become a model of regional public education with a truly global mission. Northeastern’s learning environment is enriched though the community’s ethnic, cultural, age, and language diversity. Throughout our history the University has maintained, fostered, and celebrated its commitment to diversity.

Today, Northeastern offers its 10,000 students more than 70 undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts, sciences, education, and business. Faculty encourage students to integrate classroom instruction with field-based learning, research, and service locally and around the globe.

The Governors State University was founded in 1969. It enrolled 3,021 students in Fall 2020 and has a sprawling campus of 750 acres. The institution uses a semester-based calendar. It was established with a key vision towards serving graduates of community colleges who were aspiring for baccalaureate degrees and has expanded this vision ever since. It has grown rapidly towards becoming the predominant regional public university in the south suburban zone of Chicago. 

The institution has 85+ Master’s, bachelor’s, and doctoral courses along with certification programs. One of the biggest USPs of the institution is that it offers readily accessible graduate and undergraduate education that is highly valued in the USA and also worldwide. It welcomes culturally and financially diverse pupils from across the world. It also offers a specially tailored curriculum that prepares aspirants with the necessary skill sets and knowledge they require to succeed. There are many sub-colleges within the university, including the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Health & Human Services, College of Business, College of Education, and its Dual Degree and Online programs. 

Other USPs include reputed faculty, 80+ student honor and club societies, flexible class timings and schedules for students, and of course, the coveted Governors State University ranking as the safest public university campus in all of Illinois and the best in northwest Indiana too. The institution has its own Career Services Office to help aspirants navigate their pathways towards successful and fulfilling careers in diverse fields. The Governors State University acceptance rate is 47.8% as of 2020.
