Marketing facilitates exchanges between organizations and customers and is a critical, dynamic, and multi-faceted area of business. The marketing function is found throughout organizations and businesses from global enterprises to start-ups; for services such as healthcare and banking; for nonprofits and municipalities. Students may pursue a variety of careers in marketing including: Advertising/PR/Communication, Digital Marketing, General Marketing, Marketing Research/Analyst, Merchandising/Buyer/Planner, Product/Brand Management, Business-to-Business (B2B), Sales/Business Development, Sports Marketing & Communication and Supply Chain Management.

In the marketing major, students learn the foundations of marketing—product, place, price, promotion—and how these concepts impact business strategy and execution in different industries and contexts, as well as the importance of relationships with customers and channel partners. Marketing professionals possess and develop a variety of skills including qualitative and quantitative analysis, critical thinking, creativity, communications, and problem solving. The marketing major provides a robust foundation in the marketing discipline, coupled with the flexibility to pursue several areas of interest in the discipline.

The marketing program prepares graduates to undertake and manage the processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.  Marketing professionals are product and brand managers, retail managers, salespersons, integrated marketing communications specialists, marketing researchers, digital and social media specialists, and logistics and supply chain managers. Increasingly analytics and digital tools are central to the work of marketing professionals to understand consumer and organizational markets.

As a Washburn Marketing student, you will learn to analyze the ways business firms and other types of organizations plan, organize, administer and control their resources to achieve marketing goals. Among the objectives of this program: conduct and present a comprehensive consumer behavior audit, analyze a company's existing product and determine its positioning in the marketplace; prepare and defend a marketing plan and a marketing research plan; understand the stages of the sales process; and demonstrate an understanding of the global marketplace and design marketing strategies that are appropriate for various cultures and countries.

The Advertising/Public Relations option provides students an opportunity to build both the creative and strategic skills necessary to pursue a successful career in public relations or advertising. Classes in this program focus on the techniques and processes used to create, produce, and place persuasive messages in both paid and earned media. Students in this program will also learn how to use the media to creatively and effectively deliver messages utilizing an integrated mix of traditional and new media and to develop complete campaign plans for a variety of products and services. In addition, Westerns Public Relations and Advertising Club provides opportunities for students to build a network, develop leadership skills, attend career fairs, and work with other students and businesses on real-world projects as they build their professional portfolio.

The digital age and globalization of business has transformed the way consumers behave and requires businesses to adapt to their ever changing needs. To prepare graduates for the skills needed in the new age of marketing, the Utah Tech BA/BS in Marketing Degree is uniquely designed  to allow students to focus on marketing career tracks that specifically address areas of specialization. This focused curriculum, along with the traditional marketing and business foundation courses, provides graduates with a competitive advantage. Students who seek a more global perspective on marketing may pursue the BA Degree; this requires the Bachelor of Arts foreign language requirement as outlined in the catalog for every Utah Tech BA degree.

SAU’s Marketing Media track gives students a broad knowledge of marketing but also gives them the opportunity to develop skills in areas like graphic design, website development, and social media. For non-Business majors a minor in Marketing enhances career readiness.

While pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing at the University of Mount Union, students will study the fundamentals of marketing including consumer behavior, applied strategy, integrated communications, research, and policies.
