Criminology is the study of crime and social control. Crime, how we define it, how we understand its causes, and the ways we respond to it provides a window into a society’s challenges, values and aspirations. You will consider the local, national and global aspects of crime and justice and become familiar with a range of lenses for understanding and assessing the efficiency and impact of society’s changing understandings and responses. You will gain an understanding of victimisation and perpetration, inequality and its impacts, and approaches to understanding crime and difference and learn about crime committed by individuals, groups, organisations and states and the mechanisms of the criminal justice system including police, courts and corrections.

You will engage with research and policy leaders in crime and justice and experience criminal justice in action in a range of international, national and local contexts. The course challenges you to apply abstract knowledge to real-world problems of crime and justice and develop solutions. You will be equipped to identify credible evidence, to understand how to measure and analyse the impact of policy, and to develop informed, independent thinking skills.

Criminology is concerned with understanding crime, deviance and institutions of criminal justice.

Criminologists seek to answer questions like: why are some people more likely to commit or be victims of crime than others; how can crime be effectively prevented or controlled; and from a more critical perspective, how do particular activities become defined as “criminal” in the first place and what does this tells us about the nature of power and authority in society?

Overall, the course progressively develops your critical understanding of Criminology through the examination of key concepts and theories as well as substantive issues related to crime and criminal justice. Alongside this, the course teaches critical analytical and methodological skills to equip students with the practical expertise required to engage with and carry out Criminological research. As such, by the end of the course, graduates will be able to draw upon conceptual and empirical material to critically analyse complex Criminological issues in a scholarly fashion.

The degree is based on a modular structure, with students required to take the equivalent of six modules (some of which may be ‘double modules’) within each year of study. Over the course of the degree, modules become increasingly focused on specialist topics and issues, with the chance to undertake a Sociological research project on a specific topic of substantive interest in the final year of study.

Criminology has been taught within the School of Law for over 35 years and has an outstanding reputation for both teaching quality and world-leading research in areas such as: policing, victims and restorative justice, crime and politics and the reasons why people stop offending.

This three-year course covers the foundational legal subjects and combines them with a thorough study of the principles of criminology. These include criminal justice, explanations of crime and punishment and other responses to the phenomenon of crime.

The B.S. in Criminal Justice is designed for individuals seeking a professional career in criminal justice and allows students to choose a specific focus in criminal justice, corrections, and law enforcement through a minor concentration and tailoring the major courses to meet individual interests. This degree also allows for professionals to complete their bachelor's degree as well as those transferring with their associate's degree to tailor their degree to meet their interests. 

The mission of the Criminology and Criminal Justice program is to provide a student-centered curriculum that enables students to think critically about the causes and consequences of crime and criminal behavior. Using an interdisciplinary approach, students learn and apply classical and contemporary theories of crime and the law, evaluate the major components of the criminal justice system, and develop the research skills relevant to practice in the field.

The B.A. in Criminal Justice from Georgian Court University is a truly multidisciplinary effort designed to maximize student’s preparation for a rapidly expanding field of professional opportunities and research.

The major program of study is committed to a solid criminological examination of the nature of crime and justice issues while introducing students to criminology and criminal justice terms, procedures, concepts, and issues. Specifically, students develop an understanding of the relationship between the criminal justice system and other social institutions, examine the roles created by such a system in American society, and think comparatively about international issues in criminal justice.

Utah Tech’s criminal justice major is an interdisciplinary program that combines the study of criminal law, law enforcement, and criminology, providing a firm foundation for a myriad of careers. This course of study exposes students to the interconnected nature of the criminal justice system and explores criminological explanations for crime commission. Graduates from this program are prepared to enter applied positions in the criminal justice system or pursue graduate degrees in law, criminology, sociology, forensics psychology, etc. The digital defense and security emphasis is comprised of 33 credits in addition to the established criminal justice core curriculum. This emphasis prepares students to analyze threatening and criminal behavior in digital spaces. Areas of study in this emphasis include programming, networking, and information security. Students apply their training in a culminating internship experience in the Digital Forensic Crime Lab at Utah Tech or a similar lab.

The bachelor of science in cyber criminology will produce highly skilled graduates who possess a holistic understanding of cybercrimes. This program not only emphasizes using computer science skills to investigate and study crime, but underscores theoretical human behaviors and victimization patterns that relate to cybercrimes.

Graduates with this degree will be trained for positions found in government agencies including law enforcement agencies, private protective services, financial institutions, health corporations, and businesses. Given the universal use of digital data storage, agencies, businesses, and individuals are vulnerable to fraudulent activities. Careers in cyber criminology include, but are not limited to, cybercrime investigator, information security analyst, digital forensic analyst, and cybercrime security team member.

The Criminal Justice program provides students with extensive knowledge of the U.S. Criminal Justice System, comprised of law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Students will develop the capacity to apply law, social sciences, and sound practices as criminal justice professionals in the public and private sectors. The program also provides students a foundation upon which to pursue advanced education in the criminal justice field.

Our criminal justice majors can take an “Inside-Out” course taught at a local prison (see above photo), where they learn alongside inmates. They mentor juvenile offenders and intern with local and national law enforcement agencies. They work with national datasets and lead student organizations.
