The Five-Year Master Plan is a pathway to earning two powerful credentials, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and a Master of Arts (MA) degree, in just five years. The BA/MA program in English is designed to provide a clear path for New Paltz students majoring in English Liberal Arts or Creative Writing to complete the MA degree in one year. Students in this program begin taking graduate courses during their senior year earning ten credits of graduate course work by the time they complete their BA degree. They are then able to complete the MA degree requirements by enrolling in ten credits during the subsequent fall and spring terms.

his degree does not lead to teacher licensure. Students who desire licensure should consult the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Emphasis in French is available. This program is primarily for teachers of French who are interested in pursuing an advanced degree in the language and in increasing their proficiency. The degree requires courses totaling 30 credits (with thesis) or 34 credits (with alternate plan paper). Fifty percent (50%) of the credits must be taken at the 600 level (excluding thesis and APP credits).

The Master of Arts (M.A.) program in Chinese Studies at St. John’s will provide you with a solid foundation in the language, history, and culture of China. This specialized study and the research skills you develop will prepare you for a wide range of exciting global careers, as well as for further scholarship in the field.

You may elect a thesis or non-thesis option to complete your program of study. We strongly recommend the thesis option if you wish to continue your graduate studies beyond the master’s level.

The Department of Modern Languages and Classics offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) or Master of Arts (MA) in French with optional concentrations in French Literature or North American French Studies.

Master of Arts in Teaching French:

• The M.A.T. in French (30 credits) has been redesigned with the collaboration of the campuses of the University of Maine System specifically to meet the needs of Maine’s schools.
• Candidates take seven to eight courses (21-24 credits) in language, literature, culture and linguistics in the target language, one course in language pedagogy (MLC 466/566) and one course on teaching the exceptional student in English (SED 500).
  • An oral exam and a professional teaching portfolio which illustrates the candidate’s familiarity with Maine’s teaching standards and his/her readiness to teach a second language in the K-12 classroom are the final requirements for both degrees.

The MS in Instruction in Language Arts: Secondary Education Program is designed to offer professional development to classroom teachers who are interested in updating and refining their teaching competencies in the area of English Language Arts instruction at the secondary level. Graduates of this program will have updated and advanced knowledge of the theoretical foundations of literacy and language acquisition, principles of curriculum planning and development, and language arts research, as well as instructional strategies for enhancing young people’s acquisition of reading, writing, listening, and speaking competencies in culturally diverse classrooms. Throughout the program, there is an emphasis on enhancing teachers’ leadership skills in developing and implementing language arts and English curricula.

The Master of Arts in Spanish is designed to prepare students for doctoral work, for careers as Spanish instructors in secondary and higher education institutions, for employment as professional interpreters within various industries, and for advancing their proficiency in a second language. This non-thesis program will also provide a thorough foundation in practical fluency skills through cultural, linguistic, and literary training. For this degree there are two plans:

• Plan A - designed for students seeking to continue their education into doctoral studies, to become professional interpreters, and to improve personal language skills.
• Plan B - designed for students seeking to teach Spanish at the secondary and college levels.

UND's master's degree in English features:

The Department of Educational Studies offers a certificate program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), which is designed to meet the needs of students desiring to teach English in a variety of settings throughout the world. Specialized coursework in the certificate program focuses on theories and methodologies of TESOL while providing practical classroom experience. The coursework may also be used to satisfy some of the requirements for the Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed.) in Educational and Interdisciplinary Studies for those students admitted into the M.S. Ed. program.

In the Master of Arts program, you'll explore a variety of approaches to the study of literature, language and writing to develop your abilities as a critic, writer and teacher. Courses offer in-depth study in the areas of:

This degree will provide an intensive study of French language, literatures, and cultures, in both academic and professional applications.

French is one of -- if not the -- fastest growing languages in the world.  French is spoken on all 5 continents.  Population data forecasts 750 million French-speakers by 2050, which, Forbes reports, could put French ahead of English, and even Mandarin Chinese, as the most spoken language in the world. Whether on land, underwater, in the skies, in outer space, or in cyber space, you will find that French is everywhere -- even in Missouri.  Missouri has its own dialect of French, and in 2015 Missouri conducted $4.5 billion of trade with Canada ($2 billion more than its other foreign trading partner, Mexico).

• To speak/converse in a target language with ease and confidence when dealing with routine tasks and social situations with moderate control in the present, past, and future tenses. 
• To write in the target language in a variety of styles such as taking notes on familiar topics, writing uncomplicated letters, simple summaries, and compositions related to work, school experiences, and topics of current and general interest at the Intermediate High level.
• To read and comprehend simple, connected texts in various time frames that deal with basic personal, historical, and/or social needs about which the reader has personal interest.
• To listen/understand main ideas and most details of connected discourse on a variety of topics and time frames.
• To identify cultural information or patterns, such as major geographical features, historical events, institutional characteristics, social-linguistic behaviors, and major literary/art forms of the target culture.

The master of arts in English offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of critical and creative approaches to language and literature. Students work closely with faculty at the forefront of a changing intellectual and cultural landscape in English and American Literature as well as in comparative literature, creative and professional writing, post-colonial studies, women’s and gender studies, holocaust and genocide studies, digital studies, and writing and rhetoric studies. Courses such as American Romanticism, Native American Literature, and Literature of the Sea explore the literatures of New England. Internships in Digital Humanities and College Pedagogy offer work experience and direct career preparation. For educators, successful completion of this program leads to the fulfillment of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts requirements for professional licensure to teach English at the secondary level.

This program is designed for students interested in obtaining New Hampshire Teacher Certification in English (grades 5–12). Graduates will be endorsed for certification in New Hampshire and fully qualified to teach English and language arts in grades 5–12. The program is designed to meet all New Hampshire and NCTE standards for the preparation of teachers of English and language arts as well as providing a background in the subject areas of literature, writing, and language at the graduate level.

Required college-level coursework or equivalent competencies (audit, portfolio, or exam): analyzing and interpreting literature and literary criticism; creative and non-fiction writing above composition level; study of language; study of grammar; completion of four upper-level literature courses; sign language, journalism, communications, or media; and completion of six credits in American literature, British literature, or humanities.

The Master of Arts in English affords students the flexibility to tailor their course of study to meet their individual wishes and professional goals. This highly versatile program offers courses in three areas of emphasis—literary studies, cultural studies, and professional and academic writing.  The English MA has a pathway for students to complete the program remotely.  We offer on-line asynchronous courses, on-line synchronous courses, and in-person courses with the opportunity for remote students to attend through Zoom.

The M.A. in Spanish focuses on the strengthening of the knowledge of Spanish teachers as well as of the intensive study of literature, linguistics, and culture for those students who will be continuing their advanced studies. The degree is also appropriate for those students seeking employment in the public or private sector in positions that serve the Latino community or require knowledge of Spanish at an advanced level.

The Master of Arts degree in English is designed for students who desire the challenge of an intense study of literature. Graduates of the program will have a critical appreciation of literature, a thorough knowledge of scholarly tools and the preparation necessary to become competent writers and teachers of writing. The degree requires a total of 36 semester hours of graduate-level courses in English.

Students in the program receive substantial individual attention from faculty. There are opportunities for students to do research and publish on their own or with faculty, as well as opportunities for meeting important scholars and writers at both on-campus and off-campus conferences and events. In addition, graduate assistants gain valuable professional experience as editors, scholars or instructors.
