The graduate program in history serves multiple audiences. Since historians today practice their discipline in a variety of careers, we offer a concentration in local/regional/public history. The concentration exposes students to the broad range of skills and issues associated with public history while providing them with a solid advanced background in history. Students also augment their academic training through internships in a range of public history settings including museums, archives, government agencies, libraries, historic preservation organizations, businesses, contract history firms, cultural resource management firms and historic sites.

The Graduate Program in History at Minnesota State University, Mankato provides a foundation for advanced study and professional development that prepares individuals for careers in teaching, law, journalism, public service, public history, and business. Students develop essential career skills, such as the ability to analyze conflicting information and viewpoints, write clearly and communicate ideas, find reliable evidence for judgments about human actions and motives, and place particular events in a broader context.

The graduate history program prepares students for future careers, for responsibilities in a democratic society, and for the challenging ambiguities that they will encounter in life no matter what they do or where they go in the world. The courses encourage a comparative, analytical approach to diverse cultures, historical eras, social conflicts, influential ideas, and the human experience.

Practitioners of Public History document, preserve, and interpret the past. This two-year, 33-credit Master of Arts (M.A.) program consists of 24 credits in History, Museum Studies, and Archival Management, a six-credit internship and an additional three-credit research project.

As part of the program, you will find opportunities for service, internship, and independent study throughout New York City. Strong applicants demonstrate a strong background in the humanities and social sciences, familiarity with media technologies, and a commitment to community service.

Given the growing merger of issues relating to collecting information and collections accessibility in libraries, archives and museums, St. John’s University also offers a dual master’s degree program in Public History and Library and Information Science. Our Division of Library and Information Science is American Library Association (ALA)-accredited and features an archival specialization.

The Department of History is pleased to announce that our MA in History program will be fully onlline starting in Fall 2022. Students studying on campus will have the option to take one on-campus 4000-level course each Fall and Spring semester. All seminars (5000-5999 numbered courses) will be offered online. Coursework is offered in American, Premodern World, and Modern World history. Students who pursue their degree in this program choose the thesis or non-thesis track to complete their M.A. degree. This program is separate from the Online for Teachers option.

As our alumni page attests, our program is flexible enough to meet a number of career objectives. Full-time students seeking a terminal master’s degree can complete the program in three regular semesters, including summer coursework. Students planning to go on to a doctoral program may wish to take two years.

Our programs offer rigorous training in the three areas of study. The centerpiece of each is Historiography, a course that introduces students to the methodologies and theoretical frameworks historians employ. Our proseminars in US, premodern, and modern world history introduce students to the important scholarly debates in each of these general concentrations of study.

Students interested in pursuing their degrees full-time will find our competitive graduate assistantships can make their studies affordable. These assistantships carry tuition waivers and monthly stipends. Assistants perform a range of duties, such as research assistance, teaching assistance, technology support, and editorial support for academic journals, and gain valuable skills in the process. These duties must be performed on campus.

The History Department offers MA and PhD programs of study in a wide range of fields. MA areas of concentration include U.S., Canadian, European, and East Asian history; environmental history; the history of labor, technology, and immigration; women’s history; international history; the history of cartography; and spatial and digital history. The PhD program specializes in U.S. history, Canadian-American history (including borderland studies), and international history.

East Carolina University's MA program in history affords bright and talented students the opportunity to pursue historical research to examine many of life's most interesting questions. Whichever option you select, you'll conduct significant, independent research and learn to explain the past in ways that are meaningful to the present.

The Department of History MA program is designed to train students in the methodological and theoretical components of academic history and in broad areas of historical study and analysis. The program prepares students for careers in teaching, academia, law, public and government service, publishing, research, as well as other professions. The program also assists in the professional development of full-time teachers and other educators and provides a basis for further graduate study.

The Master of Arts in History is for students looking for admittance into doctoral programs in history or a related field, pursuing advancement opportunities in secondary and elementary education, seeking certification in applied history or looking to advance in different professional areas.

In this program, you'll take a mix of American, European and transnational courses to study history on a global scale. You'll concentrate on research and primary materials while studying important monographs in all fields of history. The program also addresses several specialized fields, including areas of oral history and historic preservation.

In addition, the Department of History holds a management agreement with the Ohio History Connection to operate the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor on a daily basis. This gives you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both tradition research and applied fields.

Admission to the BA/MA program is restricted to current Johns Hopkins University undergraduate history of art majors who are pursuing the honors track in the department, including writing a senior honors thesis. Admission is based on outstanding performance in previous History of Art courses.

Students considering a five-year program are expected to declare their interest during the spring semester of their junior year. Prior to application, students must consult with the director of undergraduate studies, their faculty adviser, and the department administrator.  A formal graduate application must be submitted via the graduate school admissions site by the departmental deadline for graduate admissions (December 15th) in the fall semester of the senior year for admission to the program in the spring of the senior year, meeting the requirement for concurrent status. In the senior (fourth) year, students are to devise a program of study that would best prepare them to do advanced work in their final (fifth) year. All requirements for the BA must be completed by the end of the fourth year.

The master of arts in history provides students with the opportunity to explore a wide range of historical fields and methodologies. After fulfilling the requirements in the major geographical areas of historical study, students may concentrate in more specific regional and chronological fields. Given Salem’s prominent role in English settlement and colonization, the China Trade, and industrialization, as well as the ongoing legacy of the Witch Trials of 1692, our region provides abundant resources to support research in every period of the American past.

This program is individualized and planned with advisers to ensure that degree requirements are satisfied. Students enrolled in the program should consult with both an adviser in the History and Political Science department, as well as an adviser in the School of Education. The concentration courses focus on a discipline other than Education. A minimum of 15 credits of the degree program must be taken in History the remaining credits must be in Education.

The MA in History at California State University, San Bernardino offers students the opportunity to further their study of history in an innovative, active, and rigorous program. It is intended to train future historians and promote the professional, career, and personal goals of its student population.
