You can develop your technical and aesthetic abilities in ceramics while adapting your learning experience to suit your research interest with a master’s in Ceramics. The master’s in Art program is geared toward graduate-level students interested in expanding their portfolio in an academic setting and practicing K-12 teachers. Small class sizes provide for one-on-one relationships with faculty and cohort members. The program emphasizes the pursuit of creativity while also fine-tuning career preparedness.

The School of Art, Design and Art History offers the Master of Fine Arts degree in art with a concentration in art studio and the Master of Arts degree in art with a concentration in art studio or an emphasis in art education.

The mission for the Master of Fine Arts program is to challenge and support independently motivated artists in their intellectual, philosophical and artistic development. The graduate program encourages life-long learning, career success and community involvement.

• One official copy of all undergraduate and graduate course work; the baccalaureate transcript should be from a regionally accredited institution with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA). New Paltz is encouraging of interdisciplinary scholarship and we support applicants with degrees from non-studio areas who are able to demonstrate a strong body of work.
• Two letters of reference from former teachers or other professionals in the field familiar with the candidate’s qualifications who can support the candidate’s ability to do graduate work.
  • A 300-500 word letter of intent that states the candidate’s goals for graduate study.

The program features four tracks:

• Cultural Studies (with an optional concentration in Women's and Gender Studies)
• Interdisciplinary Research

In any track you choose according to your individual interests and goals, you will prepare for a wide range of career opportunities. You may also prepare for further doctoral study if you choose that path. The program's flexible curriculum and course scheduling is especially well-suited for working professionals pursuing a graduate degree part-time. 

The focus of the Interpersonal Communication Processes concentration is to incorporate theoretical and applied perspectives on interpersonal communication. We are speficially interested in the construction and negotiation of social reality, focusing on the fundamental processes that occur during interaction. The goal of the Interpersonal Communication Processes concentration is to acquire expertise in identifying, analyzing, and addressing the challenges of effective communication among individuals and relational partners. We examine the production, exchange, and interpretation of messages in a variety of relational contexts, including intercultural communication, conflict, the workplace, family, small group and teams, and health communication.

From 2025 to 2050, the global aging population will double in number and reach 1.6 billion (An Aging World: 2015 report by the U.S. Census Bureau (2016)). There will be a need for well-trained professionals to address the needs of this growing segment of the population on a local, national, and/or global level. Northeastern’s Gerontology program offers master’s degree training addressing both current and projected occupational knowledge and skill requirements within the field of gerontology. The M.A. in Gerontology program is an award-winning academic program, recognized as a program of excellence by both the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education and the American Psychological Association professional societies in 2014.

The Master of Fine Arts in Art and Social Practice is a three-year, 60-credit-hour program that provides a strong foundation for students to develop interdisciplinary projects that serve a meaningful purpose to surrounding communities. By collaborating with local organizations to produce works that require audience engagement, students generate awareness of social issues, unite communities, and become catalysts for change.

This MFA is open to applicants who hold an undergraduate degree in any art discipline including Photography, Digital Media, Animation, Graphic Design, 2D, 3D, and time-based Studio Art.

The Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) Degree Program in Visual Arts is a studio-oriented program that prepares its graduates for professional practice as working artists, educators and arts administrators.

The curriculum combines hands-on studio experience with comprehensive study in art history, theory and other supporting art disciplines. While inter-disciplinary exploration and growth is encouraged, students in the program work within these major areas of emphasis:

• Painting
• Photography
• Sculpture

The Master of Liberal Arts and Sciences (MLAS) is for students who need or desire advanced education but do not require a specific specialized content area. This multidisciplinary degree stresses critical thinking, comparative analysis, and connections across disciplines rather than specialization in a fairly small content area. The LAS Program is designed especially for students seeking a Masters degree as an occupational qualification and for those who wish to have a more in-depth inquiry into the liberal arts and sciences. The LAS Program promotes an advanced level of critique, analysis, and comparison. Students also explore the broad questions faced by human beings, as well as the specific means by which individual disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics have addressed these questions.

For self-motivated learners with inquisitive minds and an interest in thinking across disciplinary boundaries, the Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) Program is a graduate liberal arts program that offers a diverse range of interdisciplinary courses designed and taught by MLA Program faculty that build upon a foundation in the history of ideas while also incorporating contemporary topics, sources, and approaches to research, analysis, and discourse.

MAT in Art Education - Fifth Year Option: for PSU students in the BA or BFA programs in graphic design and studio art. This 36 credit program is based on students fulfilling nine credits of undergraduate art education courses within their BA or BFA degree: Foundations of Art Education, Methods and Materials for Art Education, Instructional Planning and Pedagogy for Art Education, and Curriculum and Assessment for Art Education. If not completed, additional graduate coursework in art education will be required to fulfill these equivalencies.

The master of fine arts in arts administration (MFA-AA) degree track is a two-year resident academic and experiential learning course of study that begins each fall. The program includes 60 credit hours (see MFA Curriculum) combined with work opportunities through our professional affiliates: arts fusion, Frehner Museum of Natural History, the Southern Utah Museum of Art, SUU’s College of Performing and Visual Arts, and the Utah Shakespeare Festival.

The MA in Studio Art degree is an interdisciplinary program that engages the creative and intellectual potential of each candidate. Graduate students focus on directed studio art practices within a series of specialization courses and assisted by a primary mentor. This degree culminates in a thesis research paper, education research paper, or technical white paper.

Upon completing the MLS degree, students will be able to:

1. Appreciate major perspectives and methods of the liberal arts by demonstrating a broadened understanding of some basic concepts in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
2. Appreciate the connection of the liberal arts to their lives and the larger world.
3. Demonstrate a capacity for analytical thinking.
4. Demonstrate good writing skills.
5. Practice critical listening and good discussion and oral communication skills.
6. Demonstrate academic research methods.
