The Clinical Nutrition MS program prepares graduates to become competent, entry-level registered dietitian nutritionists for service and practice in global and local communities through educational excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, use of research process and critical thinking skills to improve the health of populations, communities and individuals. The program is an ACEND-accredited future education model that provides integrated graduate coursework and supervised experiential learning necessary to take the national Registration Examination for Dietitians. 

The Master of Science in nutrition and dietetics coordinated program is designed for students who wish to earn a master's degree while gaining eligibility to become a registered dietitian and pursue careers as entry-level dietitians. The nutrition and dietetics program is offered through the Department of Applied Health in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior. The program combines graduate-level coursework in nutrition with the clinical curriculum and supervised practice that allows graduates to sit for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics examination for registered dietitians. This program is also ideal for those students who have earned a BS degree in another field but are now interested in becoming a registered dietitian or those who graduated with a BS in nutrition and were not matched for a dietetic internship.

The Master of Science in nutrition and dietetics advances your current knowledge of nutrition while building your research skills. Your focus on health promotion, disease prevention and medical nutrition therapy will prepare you to work as a registered dietician or nutritionist in both public and private health organizations, hospitals and government agencies.

The Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics has two option areas: Dietetic Internship (DI) and Nutrition Education. The Dietetic Internship Option (NDDI) includes the ACEND accredited DI, which is a step in becoming a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). The DI has a Nutrition Education Emphasis and participates in the DICAS matching process in both the spring and fall. The Nutrition Education Option (NDDE) is designed for individuals who are not seeking the RDN credential but who want to work in the area of nutrition or already have the RDN credential and is available on-campus or online.

The M.S. degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition is a 30 credit hour program designed to prepare students to work in areas of human nutrition and food science. Students may opt to focus their coursework on food science, human nutrition, or a combination of both. The program offers a thesis and non-thesis option, with the non-thesis option having the additional flexibility of being completed on-campus or online.

The master's in nutrition emphasizes a skill-set tailored to expanding nutrition-related needs. Students learn to assess, evaluate, and intervene in the most current and relevant nutrition issues. The curriculum prepares graduates to work for agencies, businesses, and organizations that seek to improve nutrition at the local, national, and global level. This program also prepares students to engage in further study for research careers in nutrition.

The Master of Science in Food Safety Regulation is designed to provide students with an understanding of the legal and regulatory complexities of food production, labeling, and distribution. The program will provide students with the knowledge required for companies and organizations that grow, process, distribute, or sell foods and beverages while complying with federal and state regulatory statutes for the production, distribution, and commercialization of food products. 

The Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences (FNPS) Program offers areas of study leading to three graduate degrees: Food, Nutrition and Culinary Sciences Master of Science (MS), Packaging Sciences Master of Science (MS) and Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The PhD and MS (thesis) are research degrees that require a dissertation and thesis, respectively. The MS (non-thesis) is a terminal degree that may be suited for students who will pursue a career in business, education, or other areas that do not require substantial research experience. Areas of specialization within FNPS are aligned with those of the major advisor (advisory committee chair). The MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is designed to prepare students to function as licensed clinical mental health counselors. It provides the educational requirements outlined by the New Hampshire Board of Mental Health Practice as requisite to attaining mental health counseling licensures. PSU’s mental health counseling program is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). 

The human nutrition major prepares students to participate in health care’s efforts to prevent or manage illness or chronic disease in individuals or groups through adequate nutrition. This major also encompasses nutrition science — the application of the principles of biochemistry, physiology, and biology to human nutritional needs. The major includes two tracks: the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) track leading to a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN) career and the nutrition sciences track leading to work in research or industry. Applicants to the program should specify their preferred track. Graduate study in human nutrition is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. Students are admitted only in the fall or winter terms. Students in the DPD track are required to complete a comprehensive exam at the end of the first year of study and have the option to complete a research thesis. Students in the Nutrition Sciences track are required to complete a research thesis. In addition to the core curriculum, students select specialty courses relating to their major as well as electives.

The Master of Science degree in Nutrition emphasizes a strong nutritional sciences foundation through coursework and opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research in community settings. Graduates obtain positions as nutrition-exercise specialists; cooperative extension nutrition specialists; higher education instructors; research associates; and as nutritionists in health care and community agencies such as Head Start and Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

The Nutrition major includes the following optional concentration:

• The Dietetic Internship concentration provide students with the resources and experiences needed to develop the skills necessary to become competent Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN). Emphasis is placed on intellectual, technological, and professional development while fostering ethical and humanitarian values.

With an M.S. in Clinical Nutrition from New York Institute of Technology, you’ll become an expert in biomedical nutrition therapy, assessing nutritional status and designing nutrition plans that promote wellness and treat disease for individuals and groups.

In this fully-online program, you’ll utilize the latest technologies to create an environment of dynamic interaction between you, your faculty, and your fellow students. Together, you’ll study a range of core topics in clinical nutrition, and electives chosen from nutrition oncology to pharmacology to exercise physiology. You can also tailor your degree to your specific interests in areas including the obesity epidemic, eating disorders, and more, or participate in our Center for Global Health fieldwork, and independent research projects.

The Division of Nutritional Sciences is the interdisciplinary program for graduate education in nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. More than 60 faculty, representing 15 different departments in seven colleges on the Urbana and Chicago campuses, are members of the Division. The Division is a comprehensive program of study leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, alone or in combination with either the M.D. or M.P.H. degrees or the registration in dietetics (R.D.). Flexible graduate programs of study enable students to individualize their coursework and professional training. In addition, extensive research opportunities are available that address the spectrum from research at the level of the genome and proteome to clinical and population-based intervention studies. Specialties are classified into six broad theme areas in which our faculty and students are most active (see Research Interests). These themes best reflect the areas of nutrition research for which the Division is recognized both nationally and internationally.

Acquire in-depth training in dietetics, nutrition and public health. Develop a graduate-level understanding of clinical, community and food service nutrition, and meet eligibility criteria for the Registered Dietitian credential.

The Master of Science in Human Nutrition is a 30 credit-hour program designed to prepare nutrition professionals to practice dietetics at an advanced level and/or to pursue doctoral study. The program develops research skills, stimulates independent thought, and provides up-to-date knowledge in food and nutrition. Applicants can choose to pursue the major without a concentration or can select the Community Nutrition or Clinical Nutrition concentrations to provide a more in-depth study of their chosen area. The program is designed for the registered dietitian but can be completed by a dietetic intern or student with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition or another discipline who has met the listed prerequisites.
