The Master of Arts in Humanities degree program is designed both for individuals wishing to enhance their knowledge of the humanities and their skills in humanistic inquiry and for students intending to pursue a PHD in related fields. The Humanities program brings together scholars from history, philosophy, literature, creative writing, art history, film studies, and the performing arts who share a commitment to transnational and interdisciplinary approaches to humanistic.

All students must take seminars in each of these three main areas of study and elect either a professional or research option, the latter being especially relevant for those with plans for doctoral study. The research option requires students to demonstrate proficiency in an approved foreign language and complete a thesis.

Students in the Humanities MA program, design individual programs, combining coursework in arts and humanities fields such as: African and African American studies, American studies, Asian studies, classics, comparative literature, disability studies, English, history, media study, music, theatre and dance, and visual studies. Students may also choose to integrate one of the above disciplines with a social—or natural—science. There are also several formal concentrations within the humanities interdisciplinary degree, including film and media study, social media and disability studies.

The study of classical humanities, offered by Saint Louis University's Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, is designed for students seeking firm foundations and interdisciplinary depth in their liberal arts education. It’s also intended for students who plan to pursue studies that are facilitated by knowledge of classical languages and culture. These include law, medicine, theology, philosophy, medieval and Renaissance studies, political science, communication, mythology, anthropology, psychology, art history, cultural criticism and the history of education.

Saint Louis University's classical humanities major's flexible curriculum complements other majors based on a knowledge of classical languages and culture — including law, medicine, theology, philosophy, political science, anthropology, forensic science, medieval studies and art history — and offers many types of tutorials and independent study options.

SLU's major in classical humanities requires 30 credits. Students will choose from three required courses in Latin, Greek — or both — and go on to take seven electives from any Greek or Latin courses or upper-division courses relating to classical culture. Students studying classical languages at SLU enjoy small classes and personalized attention.

Students who complete a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities will be prepared to pursue a special interest in one or more subjects within the humanities and explore the relationships between various subjects. Students will also be able to continue studies and embark on graduate or professional study, or develop analytical and expressive skills to use in any number of careers.

Because the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities includes only a few required courses, students are free to select advanced courses that reflect personal or professional interests. it’s important to work closely with an academic advisor to create a plan of study to complete the degree requirements.

As a student in the Bachelor of Science in Digital Humanities program you will examine a blend of traditional humanities disciplines—history, philosophy, linguistics, rhetoric, literature, and art history—in the context of practical, hands-on work in the digital world.

You’ll learn about communications in the context of visual design and web development, and learn how to communicate complex ideas in new ways. You will examine the evolution of technology from a historical perspective. You might study ethics in the framework of the professional and digital worlds, or explore how people use technology and how it affects their lives.

Your coursework will stretch beyond writing traditional papers to include the creation of interactive audio-visual projects demonstrating your mastery of the material. In your final year, you will complete a capstone project on a topic of your choosing. Your hard work will result in a portfolio that can be used in job interviews or graduate school applications.

The Humanities program explores human intellectual, cultural, social, and moral expressions throughout history.  You will be offered an interdisciplinary program, spanning the areas of the arts, literature, history, philosophy, religious studies, and foreign language and culture. The Humanities Major is for students who wish to further their liberal arts education and pursue a broad-based study in Humanities. The Humanities program grows out of some of the overarching traditional goals of a liberal education. The heart of the program is a Humanities Core, which is required of all Humanities students and draws on courses from several different disciplines.  The Humanities Core is designed to strengthen 

(1) your  knowledge of Western cultural history, 

(2) your awareness of ethical judgments and social values, 

(3) your appreciation of cultural differences, and 

(4) your taste in aesthetic experiences.

The humanities prelaw program takes an interdisciplinary approach to preparing students who want to graduate with an outstanding academic transcript and the kind of experience that meets law school entrance requirements. Because law schools look for students with a diverse liberal arts education, the prelaw program curriculum engages students in a series of challenging courses in history, literature, philosophy, psychology, and political science. It stresses critical thinking, learning to write well, and an understanding of human society.

The Bachelor of Arts in Honors Sciences and the Humanities (HSH) degree is designed for capable, curious students who are pursuing a broad and challenging course of study that will prepare them for a variety of careers and a lifetime of active citizenship. Most university graduates change careers several times during their lives. Therefore, this degree emphasizes “portable skills” such as critical thinking and problem solving that equip students with career flexibility. HSH also leads to knowledge and skills that qualify students for admission to graduate and professional programs such as law and medical schools. Students who seek a career in health professions can complete their science requirements while pursuing the HSH major.

The HSH major emphasizes a broad, humanistic approach to understanding the world. Students pursuing an HSH major must be admitted to the Honors College. HSH students are strongly encouraged to complete an undergraduate thesis, and those who successfully do so will graduate “with Highest Honors from the Honors College.” Students in HSH must complete one of the following concentrations: Medicine, Global Health, & the Humanities; Humanities Driven STEM; Environmental Science & the Humanities; and Politics, Philosophy, Economics, & Law. The Master of Arts in Medical Humanities and Bioethics is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to educate medical personnel on the legal, historical, ethical, and cultural contexts of medicine.  Medical Humanities uses the perspectives and tools of humanities disciplines to study the human contexts of healthcare.  Graduates of this unique degree program obtain a multidisciplinary understanding of medicine that can robustly influence their teaching, advising, ethical decision making, and patient care.

The proposed MA in Medical Humanities and Bioethics provides a curriculum based in the humanities and social sciences departments of the College of Arts & Sciences, with specific emphasis on topics related to health and medicine.  This degree program is designed to provide a broad understanding of these issues and questions through a focused and systematic program of study drawing upon faculty from various disciplines in the humanities, the social sciences, and the domains of ethics.

In addition, students in this program will have the opportunity to engage in collaboration with the Miller School of Medicine’s Institute for Bioethics & Health Policy and the College of Arts & Sciences’ Center for the Humanities.

The MA in Humanities is an interdisciplinary, comparative, and globally-oriented master's program offered by the Department of Comparative Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences.  It is designed for students who seek to integrate two disciplines in the arts and humanities, and/or historical periods, with community enrichment. 

The purpose of the Humanities major is to provide the opportunity for broad experience in the Humanities departments with enough study in one field to prepare for graduate work and to ensure against superficiality. Organization of knowledge along the lines of traditional departments is important, but great benefit may be derived from supplemental study in concentrations such as Classical Civilization, Contemporary Culture, Asian Studies, etc. The program not only gives the student a thorough Liberal Arts background, but also provides a valuable foundation for a variety of professional fields, such as teaching, journalism, law, librarianship, foreign service, the religious professions, music, arts administration, and government service.
