The Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) curriculum provides a platform for students to study how equity and social justice are connected to gender, sexuality, and identity. Gender and Women's Studies students explore the field through traditional disciplines, such as literature, history, anthropology, sociology, public health, education, law, biology, psychology, political science, and the visual arts. Students in our courses develop strong analytical and communication skills through classroom discussion, writing, and independent projects. Undergraduates in our programs can pursue research skills through thesis writing, as well as professional development opportunities through career workshops with alumni and in our internship program. As a result, graduates from our programs apply a critical lens in fields like health and public policy, social justice and advocacy, reproductive justice, non-profit administration, clinical medicine, software development, communications, and media production.

The Asian Studies program offers students the opportunity to deepen their international outlook and cultural understanding of Asia through interdisciplinary study. In conjunction with Japanese or Chinese language study, students may choose from several dozen courses offered by faculty from over ten departments. The program's regional coverage includes South, Southeast, East and Northeast Asia.

Students in Asian Studies often, though not always, combine their Asian Studies major with another major or minor in a particular discipline.

The Asian Studies program strongly encourages study abroad in Asia. Through the campus' Center for International Programs, students have access to many opportunities including, though not limited to, programs in China, Japan, Korea, and India.

The Urban and Regional Studies Institute is an interdisciplinary degree program oriented toward examining and understanding the broad range of problems and challenges associated with the nation’s cities and regional areas. There are many career opportunities in community development, urban/regional planning, local government, and local government management. Also, the major is excellent preparation for graduate work in the professional fields of planning, management, business, etc.

This national award-winning program includes classroom, research, and field experience. In addition to formal course work, students are encouraged to undertake independent study, become involved in community service projects, participate in field studies, and accept internships in local agencies. Religious Studies is the major for you if you want to understand people better, yourself as well as others. In your classes, you'll study the ways religion shapes peoples lives, past and present, from the local to the global. You should major in religious studies if you want a liberal arts degree that gives you advanced skills in critical thinking, intercultural competency, and communication. The focus on analysis within this degree means religious studies majors are among the top performers on GREs and LSATS, so the degree with prepare you for a variety of post-graduate opportunities: law school, graduate school, or seminary.

Because religion is everywhere in human experience, studying it provides a foundation for engaging with and appreciating people of all backgrounds. Ultimately, religious studies majors develop a toolkit for understanding human beings in light of their ultimate concerns and the particular contexts in which they live.

If you feel as though choosing a single focus is not the right fit for you, consider the Interdisciplinary Studies major, which allows you to “create your own degree.” Choose two or three complementary tracks of study that will allow you to master the skills you need to land your dream job or start your own business. As an added bonus, you will have a lot more course-schedule flexibility. This program is ideal for all students, including transfers and students who hold an Associate Degree.

This degree is appropriate for individuals wishing to work in childcare agencies and/or social services agencies that cater to the growth and development of children or students wishing to pursue graduate studies in psychology or education. Students will receive a grounding in psychology courses that will provide an understanding of theory and practices related to working with children and adolescents. They will also receive basic instruction in educational courses to provide them with an understanding of the psychosocial and physical development of children.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate the fundamentals of providing emotional, psychological, academic and physical support to children and adolescents in an early education, child care, social service or mental health settings.

2. Describe theories and major concepts related to the development and or interventions with children and adolescents.

3. Demonstrate recognition of the importance of human diversity and multiculturalism important to successful interventions with children, adolescents and their care takers.

4. Evaluate scholarly and peer reviewed research relevant to issues impacting the success of children and adolescents.

5. Apply ethical behavior when interacting with child and adolescent clients or students and their caretakers.

6. Illustrate the competent use of interpersonal communication skills when interacting with others in a professional setting

7. Remember the appropriate application of psychological skills, knowledge and principles necessary for assisting children, adolescents and their caretakers in various academic, child care, social service and mental health settings.

The individualized nature of the Integrated Studies degree is attractive to students with multiple interests. Students integrate course work in emphases such as biology, earth science, business, health, literature, languages, communication, philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and the arts. Emphases from computer science and information systems, accounting, technology management, and physical education are also offered as part of this degree.

The Community Development and Planning certificate is designed to meet the needs of students desiring to work and influence rural and urban communities by integrating coursework in both planning and economic development. Specialized coursework in the certificate program focuses on issues related to planning and community development in rural and urban areas. The program culminates in a closely supervised internship experience (11 months) in the management of community development projects. In lieu of internship, students may customize their coursework with additional planning and/or geospatial technologies, all essential to the practice of community development.

Combining classroom and field experience, the program prepares you to work in a broad range of settings that serve children, families and consumers addressing the daily challenges of families and consumers.

You will be able to personalize your education through the Family and Consumer Studies major. Included in the program is a minor component, where you will select a minor to create a unique program of your own that reflects your career interests.

The program is designed to give you an in-depth study of individuals and families across the course of their life. Centering on planning, thinking and caring for and about families, the major readies you for employment in a variety of agencies and businesses.

The Center for Africana Studies (CAS) offers a rigorous focus on African-descended peoples and their cultures across the globe. Over the past millennium, the contribution, traditions, and values of African, African-American, and African Diaspora cultures helped create the modern and pre-modern world. Africana Studies, as a field of study, grew from the activist and scholarly traditions of Black Studies and the blending of peoples and ideas between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. It therefore offers a broad, multidisciplinary approach to history and culture centered on the interests, conditions, philosophies, conceptual schemes, and value systems of African-descended people everywhere. Our courses focus on the human experience in the context of social, political, demographic, cultural, religious, and economic systems. They also offer a unique perspective on racism, colonialism, capitalism, and geography that properly situates the importance of people of color to the making of the modern world.

The major in Interdisciplinary Studies offers intellectually curious students two specialized concentrations in American Studies or Peace and Conflict Studies as well as a self-designed option. These interdisciplinary fields of study are regularly available to students at private or elite universities but less frequently at public regional ones. We are here to change that while ensuring that our graduates leave Salem State with critical 21st century skills, training and experiences which allow them to compete with peers from around the nation and around the world.

All Interdisciplinary Studies majors take departmental courses augmented by courses drawn from across the campus. Our dynamic but flexible programs in American Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies prepare students to launch careers and lives fully engaged in issues of social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion, global and local policy work and social change while also preparing them for a wide array of graduate programs. Carefully scaffolded courses of study ground all of our Interdisciplinary Studies majors in the integrative work of interdisciplinarity, while providing top-notch training in the well-established fields of either American Studies or Peace and Conflict Studies.

Additionally, we offer students unique opportunities to do civic engagement and study abroad as part of their major. For students seeking a robust interdisciplinary major other than these two concentrations, our self-designed option offers a way for a first or second year student to construct (with departmental approval) an individualized program rooted in our department’s core/required courses. Interdisciplinary Studies major alumni include award-winning educators, social service leaders, museum professionals, Ph.D. students, activists, global NGO workers, and entrepreneurs among others. This major is an excellent complement to a second major in a variety of fields including education.

The Utah Tech Bachelor of Individualized Studies is a versatile degree program in which students customize and title their program of study in accordance with their post-graduate goals and in collaboration with supportive and enthusiastic faculty mentors. This degree program aims to serve students with the maturity and life experience to participate in the design of their own majors, especially under-served, nontraditional university populations such as returning older students who may have a variety of college credits and work experiences but who would not be as well served by a baccalaureate in any single, standard academic discipline.
