Our photography concentration nurtures a sense of adventure and curiosity coupled with technical sophistication through a vibrant dialogue between the traditional and digital realms of photography.

In light of its ability to represent reality, photography raises important issues concerning visual expression, representation, and the subjectivity of the manipulated photographic image. Through classroom exposure to different photographic processes, aesthetic criticism, and contemporary and historical movements, students are encouraged to explore the full range of expression available within the medium, as well as to understand the artistic and social implications of photography.

The photography program is intended for individuals who wish to explore the medium as a fine art and to prepare them for success as working artists. Students are exposed to a variety of approaches, and importance is attached to contemporary ideas in photography, individual research and mastery on techniques, both traditional and digital.

In the introductory and intermediate courses, emphasis is placed on gaining proficiency in traditional and digital image-making techniques and processes, as well as exposure to the medium’s history, contemporary practice and its place in contemporary art. Advanced courses stress experimental research with techniques and materials and focus on building a personal artistic vision through several, larger bodies of work.

The photography facilities, located on the third floor of Arends Hall, include darkrooms for black and white and color as well as some non-silver processes. A classroom/studio, used for critiques and demonstration, is equipped with both incandescent studio lights and electronic flash units. Digital workstations are equipped with Epson scanners and printers. The lab is also equipped with an Imacon film scanner and an Epson large format printer.

The Department of Art and Design offers a BA and a BFA degree. It provides a creative environment for academic excellence in the areas of drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, graphic design and photography. The curriculum offers a strong foundation in the creation, history, and theory of the visual arts and design, preparing students for professional careers and graduate studies. Majors and minors receive rigorous training and individualized attention by faculty who are committed to teaching excellence in traditional practices, expanded media, and trans-disciplinary approaches to art, through contemporary curriculum that emphasizes experimentation, problem solving and collaboration. The Department of Art and Design also provides experiences for the liberal arts students who wish to explore studio practices through elective courses.

Students in the Photography minor acquire technical skills in digital imaging, photographic lighting, and traditional and alternative processes. The curriculum emphasizes individual artistic development while integrating the history of photography and critical theory. Students are given the tools to create visually compelling photographs that communicate their artistic ideas.

You'll benefit from small class sizes; enrollment in photography courses is restricted to 12-to-15 students.

The UWG Photography program addresses the many uses of photography in fine arts, advertising, and journalism. Photography is a fundamental part of our culture and students are encouraged to explore its many philosophical and commercial possibilities. Cross-disciplinary coursework includes related areas such as Graphic Design, Printmaking, and Painting.

In the Department of Art and Art History at Bridgewater State University, we explore art forms across a diversity of perspectives and disciplines, challenging our students to delve into the history, analysis and creation of evocative artwork. Students gain an immersive education through direct experiences with dedicated faculty and thought-provoking visiting artists and scholars, and further enhance their classroom learning with visits to museums, galleries and art studios in Boston, Providence and New York.

The Photography program provides in-depth experience in black and white and color fine art photography utilizing film and digital technologies as well as commercial photography and alternative approaches to the medium. Technical mastery and advanced conceptual thinking are emphasized, along with a solid grounding in historical and contemporary issues.The photography area has a primary aim to provide a high quality professional undergraduate education in fine art photography. The program’s curriculum centers on mastery in film and digital technologies as well as strong conceptual development towards a final portfolio and exhibition. The photography area also serves many art and non-art students who take photography classes as electives.

The B.F.A. Photography/Computer Imagery program offers students a professional degree with an emphasis on creativity, critical thinking, and practical application, in terms of both digital and traditional photographic processes. The photography/computer imagery program allows each student to develop a personal style, informed through the study of photography as an art form, the historical context from which it emerged, and its role within contemporary art and culture.

The discipline emphasized in our B.F.A. program is art photography — specifically the creation of art to be displayed in museums, sold in galleries, or published in books. Graduates of our program may also find receptive employers in advertising, and editorial illustration.

A major is required to mount an individual exhibition of his or her work in their senior year. It will be planned and installed with the advice of the student's Senior Studio adviser, but no grade will be assigned.

Students are expected to assume the costs of certain materials and cameras (film and digital) needed to make photographs. Cameras and other photography equipment are not provided to do course work by the college. However, we do provide a well-equipped computer/digital-printing lab for color, a black-and-white film developing lab, and a print-enlarging lab to make traditional monochromatic silver prints. All photography courses have a materials fee. This fee covers chemistry, ink jet inks, certain ink jet papers, and some other materials. The fee does not cover film, cameras, flash equipment, and other equipment and supplies needed by all majors. Students enrolled in a studio course are expected to work a minimum of two additional hours each week outside of class for each credit granted for that class.

The study of photography in Art and Design emphasizes creativity, craft, and making memorable pictures. Our courses teach film and digital camera craft, traditional film developing and print enlarging, the use of electronic flash, the use of computers and ink jet printers, color management, and Photoshop as used by photographers. some of our students go on to do graduate degrees and to teach. Our graduates include self-employed artists, freelance photographers, and teachers. The art world, advertising, photojournalism, education, and industry are some fields in which our graduates have found employment.

The photography major is focused on the development of students as artists and practicing professionals. In addition to mastering the camera and associated technology, students will develop a distinctive personal style through their experiences inside and outside the classroom. Majors are well versed in historical and contemporary art, and are given numerous opportunities to exhibit their work, travel, and receive feedback from faculty and peers. Prior to graduation, students will professionally mount a public exhibition of the work in The Lore Degenstein Gallery, where they will gain experience in a professional gallery with museum standards.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design with an emphasis in Photography prepares students for a variety of careers in the field. Beginning with strong foundational principles of design in related fields, and how to apply them in videography, web design, and more, students then move on to the advanced study in the field of photography specifically. The degree is ideal for students who wish to delve deeply into the field and prepare a professional portfolio to enter into a career directly after graduation. As with the other BFA programs, the emphasis in Photography focuses on creativity, problem solving, project development and teamwork, and mastery of technique and craftsmanship, while providing the interdisciplinary perspective necessary to succeed in today's art and design fields.

At JBU, you'll practice the art and science of photography. With a study and practice of studio photography, fine art photography and social documentary, you will be equipped to enter the variety of industries that rely on images to convey information, create emotion and tell stories. In JBU's program, you'll work with both analog (film) and digital cameras, gain experience with a variety of mediums, use traditional and digital darkrooms and learn cutting-edge editing software.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography is a skill-building, tool-based degree designed to prepare and empower students for creative professional careers. We are a fine art program that fosters a technical, lens-based education within a private university.
