The English program at Lakeland creates strong readers, accomplished writers, and critical thinkers who can appreciate how texts shape our understanding of the world. English students, therefore, develop skills central to living in the Information Age and most in demand by employers. Our majors and minors learn to read closely and critically, to write persuasively and confidently, and to work and think independently.  And this expertise comes from interrogating and engaging with texts of all types – from classics to comics, poetry to popular culture, novels to the latest products of New Media. 

English majors and minors are employed in a wide array of careers, including education, research, writing, law, business, industry, communications, and public service – any field that values critical thinking and asks one to use language with skill. By virtue of its versatility, English degrees remain one of the most highly employable of all liberal arts degrees. 

Students who have successfully completed a B.A. in English from Lakeland University should be able to:

• Read critically and closely, analyzing how texts and language create and affect meaning and our understanding of the world.
• Write convincing arguments that are logical, well supported, and professionally presented.
• Communicate their ideas with others in ways that are clear, respectful, and evidence-driven.
• Identify key literary techniques, figures, and movements across a diverse range of texts in English.

Comparative Literature takes as its special mandate the teaching and comparing of world literature, not only as social documents but also as works of art whose full appreciation depends on the study of languages, an understanding of diversity and globalization, and an appreciation of various media. The program encourages the study of literature by promoting the study of a second or third foreign language and by sponsoring courses and dissertations that cut across national boundaries. The three introductory courses, Introduction to Comparative Literature, World Literature: From the Beginning to 1700 A.D., and World Literature: 1700 to the Present, give students a base upon which to build their studies.  The Comparative Literature program is designed so that students can individualize their plans of study.

Comparative Literature recognizes that some fields - classics, medieval studies, Renaissance, post-colonial - are inherently comparative and seeks to facilitate the work of students and scholars in these fields. The program also recognizes the role of other disciplines, particularly history and philosophy, but also the social sciences and psychology in developing theoretical approaches to literature.

The BA in Literature equips students with a well-rounded background in British, American, and world literatures, as well as an introduction to critical theory. The program prepares graduates for a wide range of professions, including careers in education, publishing and editing, marketing, law, and administration.

The English Studies emphasis in the English major is for students who want to design their own major within the English Department. If one of our other emphases doesn't quite meet the goals you have for your degree, you can work with a faculty mentor in the English Department to plan a program that will. That means you can choose your own combination of literary study, creative writing, professional writing, and language study. With your mentor, you'll figure out which courses work for your goals and why, and explore special options like independent study to help customize your English major.

When we talk about earning an English degree from Indiana University Kokomo, we’re talking about studying how humans produce, consume, interpret, and think about texts. This includes everything from “capital-L” works of Literature (Moby Dick and Shakespeare, for example) to emerging genres like micro-fiction and web writing and pretty much everything in between.

As an English student, you’ll also study how people communicate—orally, in writing, and through the use of images and sounds—and how we use these various mediums to persuade, entertain, and inform.

We’ve designed our curriculum to offer you practical skills, in-depth knowledge, and in-service learning. During your time at IU Kokomo, you’ll be encouraged to network, get involved on campus in student organizations, take part in some serious researching, publish your work in Field, take some internships for on-the-job learning, and even travel! English faculty have recently sponsored study abroad trips to England, France, Hawaii, and Ireland.

UVU’s English program is designed to give students skill, confidence, and versatility in writing, speaking, and interpreting texts. The program provides opportunities for students to consider and practice the applications of effective language use in diverse situations: professional, pragmatic, social, political, and aesthetic. The English program emphasizes knowledge and use of standard English in all written work, yet incorporates an understanding that English is a desirably diverse and variable phenomenon. The courses of study in English are designed to familiarize students with much of the traditional canon of literature. They are also designed to provide students with the critical and ethical skills necessary to interrogate this canon, to incorporate and legitimize their own and others’ “different” voices, not just in the academy, but in any of the many situations in which language influences human activity.

The Department of English offers the sequence of courses in composition required of all students, literature, drama, and film courses which fulfill the Humanities and Multicultural Studies requirements of the University General Education Curriculum, a major and minor in English, a comprehensive major in English Teacher Education, minors in Creative Writing, Film, and Professional Writing, and electives in advanced writing and creative writing. It also participates in interdisciplinary programs in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Environmental Studies, Queer Studies, and Women Studies. Although the departments offerings are diverse, critical writing, reading, and thinking developed by active engagement with and participation in the related discourses of literature, film, creative, and expository writing are the constant emphases. The department prepares its graduates to perform successfully in graduate and professional schools and in the many fields in which clear thinking and effective self-expression are valued.

The curriculum of the East Asian Studies major consists of a balanced mixture of language and area studies. All majors must study an East Asian language during their time at Hopkins. They also have the opportunity to choose from a rich menu of content courses dealing with East Asia. 

In addition to solid language training and content courses about the region, EAS majors receive training in the methods and theory of the particular academic discipline they select as a focus area. Students select from among four discipline-based focus areas - history, political science, history of science and technology, or sociology - or create an individualized focus area. Possible individualized focus areas include art history, archaeology, or business. The individualized focus area requires consultation and approval of the program director.

If they choose, East Asian Studies majors may double major in International Studies, as the requirements of each of the four focus areas overlap with those of International Studies. Students may also find it convenient to double major in history, political science, sociology, or history of science, medicine and technology.

The program prepares students for careers in teaching as well as literary and linguistic scholarship; it also provides a background for a number of challenging professions.

Southern Utah University offers both a minor and a bachelor's degree program in English. The following emphases are available on both the minor and the bachelor's degree: Creative Writing, Literature, Secondary Education. In addition, a composite degree in Secondary Education/Creative Writing is available for English majors. The members of the faculty in the Department of English help students choose between various career paths such as writing the next great American novel, educating young minds, or becoming a Corporate Communications Specialist.

Our language arts education program will turn you into an outstanding writer and language arts teacher. You’ll take liberal arts and literature courses alongside education courses and spend time observing and teaching in local classrooms. You’ll learn about child and adolescent development, curriculum, methods of teaching, and more. You'll have the ability to add on the I/S licensure and TESOL options. You’ll graduate ready to be licensed to teach language arts to seventh- through 12th-graders in Ohio.

The B.A. in English with a concentration in Literature allows students to explore their own literary and linguistic heritage and to become acquainted with representative works of major world writers. We offer a wide range of courses in English, American, multicultural, and international literature. Courses in critical theory and the history and structure of the language help students sharpen their analytical faculties, encourage clarity of thought and expression, and stimulate and develop the critical and creative imagination. The degree in literature develops critical thinkers and effective communicators, people whose skills are applicable in a wide range of careers including education, publishing, writing, information and research, media, politics and public service. Classics is the study of languages, culture, history, and thought of the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome. Through this major, you will develop strong analytical and communication skills. The major also has an option for teaching if you would like to teach Latin. As a Classics student, you’ll study:

Upon completing the BA degree with a major in Asian Studies, students will be able to:

1. Develop a broad historical and geographic knowledge about Asia as a transnational region.

3. Demonstrate the ability to incorporate Asian-language sources into academic research.
