The BSD program in interior design at The Design School explores how people inhabit, interact with and transform interior environments. Interior designers create environments within buildings that meet the physical and psychological needs of individuals and institutions, providing a useful, rich and rewarding environment for users. Interior design involves the design of space, equipment and furniture. It requires substantial technical and organizational understanding; sensibility to form, lighting, color and texture; and an awareness of design history and theory.

All students admitted to the major must pass a degree milestone at the end of the first year to continue in the major. This is an eight-semester program requiring sequential completion of studio coursework or approved equivalent at any point of entry.

Interior Design is the art of creating a memorable experience of the space that surrounds us. Woodbury’s School of Architecture offers a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design at its Los Angeles campus. Through small class sizes and individual attention, we foster close mentoring relationships between faculty, staff and students.

Interior design is based on solving problems related to the quality of people’s physical environment within a structure to achieve interior space.  These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants, and are aesthetically appealing.  Students in Purdue’s interior design program develop the analytical skills and gain the experience to plan commercial, institutional, healthcare, retail, and residential interiors. This program aims to develop students as creative designers who can formulate, propose, and execute creative design solutions for the physical, social, and psychological needs of a changing society influenced by rapid changes in technology.  Purdue’s interior design program is CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) accredited.

Coursework encompasses creative exploration, professional preparation, technical information, and skills with emphases on interior construction, building systems, codes, equipment, and components as well as accessibility, environmental, and sustainability strategies.

The B.F.A. in Interior Design program prepares students for successful careers in the rapidly growing and changing field of interior design. It strives to reflect the values of contemporary interior design practice as it prepares graduates for careers as licensed professional interior designers who are adept at providing provocative aesthetic solutions to client needs while managing program, schedules and budgets.

The Interior Design program is highly competitive and requires the submission of a portfolio for admission into the concentration. Following a year of required fine arts foundations coursework, Interior Design applicants take three introductory classes in the fall of their sophomore year to qualify to submit B.F.A. application portfolios for admission into the concentration. The initial 3000-level courses:

• are open to potential Interior Design majors who have completed the first-year Art & Design foundations course sequence;
• introduce varied practical aspects of contemporary interior design practice;
• introduce critical analysis and evaluation methods applied to current and historical architecture and interior spaces; and
• introduce basic architectural drawing (drafting) and communication skills required of successful Interior Design majors.

Interior design, as defined by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification, “is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants, and are aesthetically attractive.” In the state of Louisiana, interior design is a licensed profession.

• It is the mission of the Interior Design program to provide students the opportunity to participate in the design, development and implementation of creative and technical solutions for a variety of interior environments in which all people exist and function.
• The program offers coursework that synthesizes design history and theory, structural and technical systems, legal, ethical, and economic frameworks for professional practice along with the social, cultural and environmental context of the built environment.  
• Students will deal with Interior Design in the context of the architectural and engineering environments in which their anticipated projects reside.
• The program prepares students to fully utilize 21st century technology, specifically information technology and digital media, in the process and products of Interior Design.
• An additional and critical goal of the program is the preparation of students to work in maintaining the health, safety and welfare of the public by understanding and adhering to building and life safety codes, having an awareness of ergonomics, universal design, and ADA requirements, and becoming knowledgeable about environmentally responsible building practices and materials. The undergraduate Interior Design program explores the behavioral, technological, environmental, and aesthetic aspects of interior design within the context of increasingly more complex design projects. Combined with art and art history, and general education requirements, a core of interior design courses creates a unique education at the forefront of design. Through academics grounded in problem-solving design studios, cooperative employment, and a dedicated faculty, the Interior Design program prepares students for leadership positions in the industry. The Interior Design program is consistently ranked among the top programs in the country and in the survey by DesignIntelligence of "America's Best Design Schools."

The BS in Interior Design program is CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) and NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art & Design) accredited. 

Emphasis is on the student's application of design processes to creatively solve problems of the interior environment based on knowledge of human safety, functional utility, and physical, psychological, and contextual fit.  Graduates in interior design are competent in visual communication (sketching, drafting, and computer-aided design), design problem solving, space planning, lighting and color specification for interiors, finish and furniture selection, detailing interior construction, and application of human factors.  The curriculum is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) as providing professional-level education.

Transfer students with studio credits from other colleges and universities must present a portfolio of work done in those courses to determine if these credits can be applied toward specific studio requirements.  Students are required to present their portfolio upon admission and prior to registration for classes.  Arrangements for this process must be made with department advisors.

The Council for Interior Design Qualification describes that interior design encompasses the analysis, planning, design, documentation, and management of interior non-structural/non-seismic construction and alteration projects in compliance with applicable building design and construction, fire, life-safety, and energy codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines for the purpose of obtaining a building permit, as allowed by law. Qualified by means of education, experience, and examination, interior designers have a moral and ethical responsibility to protect consumers and occupants through the design of code-compliant, accessible, and inclusive interior environments that address well-being, while considering the complex physical, mental, and emotional needs of people.
