The major in Community and Applied Psychological Studies (CAPS) focuses on the promotion of healthy development and well-being. It prepares students to work with people in multiple contexts and settings:

• health and human services
• schools, universities, and community programs
• government and non-government agencies
• grass-roots movements
• socially responsible business and entrepreneurial organizations

By exploring the scholarly and practical interconnections among individual, interpersonal, social, and community approaches to change, students learn to identify barriers to well-being and to implement effective change-oriented strategies and policies. CAPS coursework emphasizes theory, research, and skills. It culminates in a practicum in a setting related to students’ area of interest and prepares them for both graduate studies and careers.

In addition to serving as the customary choice for students pursuing our dual degree program for licensed teachers, the English concentration in English Studies Pedagogy also is available as a free standing concentration that provides students with great options if they wish to take a non-licensure path towards a teaching-related career. Students can pursue lateral entry positions, opportunities to teach overseas, graduate school, and a host of other jobs that require the content knowledge, writing, and teaching skills that students learn in this concentration.

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Students interested in pursuing a career that focuses on the research and/or practice of educational and school psychology are attracted to Appalachian State University’s Psychology (BS) - Education Studies degree. Specifically, students who pursue this degree will gain a deeper understanding of the science of teaching and learning, as well as an appreciation of the systems and processes that shape modern education.

This degree’s curriculum provides a background for graduate work in school, educational, or counseling psychology. A majority of students in this concentration are pursuing a career in a helping/education profession and chose Appalachian because of the number of faculty in Department of Psychology with education interests and backgrounds.

Many students stay at Appalachian to pursue the Master of Arts and Specialist in School Psychology degree, which provides graduate students with the training needed to enter the field as a school psychologist. Juniors and rising seniors who are completing the Psychology (BS) - Education Studies degree are encouraged to contact School Psychology faculty to discuss options and application requirements.
