This specialization is designed for students who wish to become medical technologists certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Medical technologists should have a firm understanding of the theory behind the diagnostic tests they perform in the clinical laboratory.

Their responsibilities encompass all clinical laboratory disciplines, such as clinical chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, immunology, blood and organ banking, microbiology, parasitology, and nuclear medicine. As self-motivated, inquisitive scientists, medical technologists contribute to the development of new methods and laboratory instrumentation that aid physicians in preventing and curing disease. Most medical technologists are employed in hospitals, but private laboratories, physicians' offices, government agencies, industrial and pharmaceutical laboratories, and university research programs offer growing opportunities for employment advancements.

One of the largest face-to-face programs of its kind in the United States, the accredited medical laboratory science bachelor’s program at Tarleton is a 3+1-year, university-based professional degree program. This means you complete three years of required undergraduate course work at Tarleton or another college or university, then transfer to Tarleton’s Fort Worth campus for a professional year of medical laboratory science training.

The 16-month cohort program includes a period of intensive study in lecture classes and basic laboratory and instrumentation techniques, with graduate-level coursework, followed by a period of clinical practice. Program graduates will be awarded a Professional Certificate from Tarleton and are eligible to take the national MLS Board of Certification exam through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Students in Medical Laboratory Sciences (Medical Technology) prepare to become medical laboratory scientists who work in the laboratory/diagnostic sector of the health professions industry and in research laboratories. Graduates have high levels of employment and can work across the United States. Medical laboratory sciences students are on campus for three academic years and then spend their senior year in a ten to twelve-month practicum at an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Sciences in a medical center. While students are studying at their practicum location, they follow the policies and procedures for the practicum institution.  Students are required to cover all costs associated with attending the practicum.  The University of Maine is affiliated with the School of Medical Laboratory Sciences at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, ME, Vanderbilt Universtiy Medical Center in Nashville, TN, and the Clinical Laboratory Scientist program at New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. Juniors in the Medical Laboratory Sciences program apply directly to the practicum programs at our affiliated schools or other accredited programs for admission to the practicum. Obtaining admission to medical facilities offering a practicum is a competitive process and a student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 overall and 2.5 in science and math courses to be considered for admission to most practicum programs. Completing coursework at the University of Maine does not guarantee a position in a practicum.  For enrollment in a practicum program, students must successfully undergo a health check, a criminal background check and a drug test at some practicum schools.  After completing the practicum, students are eligible to take the national accreditation examination administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathology.

The Molecular & Integrative Biology program at UND emphasizes knowledge that spans across levels of biological organization, from the gene and cell, to the development and physiology of organisms, all the way up to species interacting in their environments.

Forecasts for careers in health care are off the charts, including the need for laboratory scientists. As a medical laboratory science major at USM, you’ll master the skills to run diagnostic tests to provide data for key physicians and nurses.

The program prepares students for required academic internships with the School of Medical Laboratory Science at North Kansas City Hospital. The program is practical, also preparing students to ultimately pass national certifying examinations.

The BS in Cell and Molecular Biology prepares students for graduate studies or work in biomedical fields. Laboratory experiences include opportunities for students to conduct original research working closely with a faculty mentor. This degree is also appropriate for professional schools including medical, dental, and veterinary schools. Note that some professional/graduate schools require a full year of physics. Students should work closely with their academic advisor to plan their coursework.

The Undergraduate Program in Cancer Biology was established in 2020 as a joint program between the Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology (CDIB) in the School of Medicine. This program is the only one of its kind in the US to specifically train students in cancer biology. 

The central mission of the new Cancer Biology undergraduate major is to provide students with a strong educational and research background that maximizes their chances to achieve career goals in cancer biology in particular and life sciences in general. This program is unique in that students will gain a broad background in the biomedical sciences by exposure to courses that support the current requirements of the biomedical enterprise and are applicable to academic, private and government settings. Furthermore, by requiring a research component, all students within this major will have early exposure to a cutting-edge research environment through participation in current investigator-led programs in multiple research-intensive departments at UAB and in collaboration with the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. 

UAB’s mission includes the promotion of discovery, knowledge dissemination and education. The Cancer Biology major helps to fulfill these goals by training students to take up positions in research and clinical laboratories, by providing a solid foundation for future graduate study, and by providing informed individuals appropriate for employment in multiple health-related settings. Disciplines covered will include not only cell biology and chemistry, but also microbiology, immunology, genetics, pathology, pharmacology and medicine. This interdisciplinary curriculum reflects the diverse nature of the disease itself. 

Because of these features, students will be exposed to a robust and flexible educational experience. Undergraduates will have the opportunity to undertake high quality research in laboratory settings across campus. They will receive research training from world-class investigators at an earlier stage than their peers and have exposure to state-of-the-art technologies, which will increase the desirability of these students for both professional careers or post-graduate programs with an exceptional background in cancer biology and laboratory research.

As a molecular biology major at ONU, you’ll map genes using fruit flies (as part of an NSF-funded multi-institution course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE)), test the ability of chemicals to mutate DNA, and clone genes. You’ll explore exciting breakthroughs in stem cell technology and microRNA molecules and debate the ethical and social issues involved. 

Large institutions just can’t provide the individualized attention and opportunity you’ll find here. As a freshman, you’ll be in the lab working with real professors – not graduate assistants or lab instructors. Throughout your four years, you’ll design and conduct your own experiments, work on independent projects, and assist professors with grant-funded research. Most molecular biology students present their research at regional and national conferences. 

The field of genomics is transforming the field of biology and making an impact in the fields of oncology, pharmacology, and infectious disease. Together with molecular genetics (a branch of genetics that studies the structure and activity of genetic material at the molecular level), scientists are discovering the DNA blueprints of organisms and how their construction, regulation, and mutation contributes to human diseases.

Experts in the field of genomics and molecular genetics not only scrutinize the functioning and composition of a single gene, but also understand the interrelationships of genes to identify their combined influence on the growth and development of the organism. Students in the genomics and molecular genetics degree program at Florida Tech explore this scientific relationship, developing the knowledge to solve real-world problems like antibiotic-resistant bacteria and curing cancer.

Professors immediately immerse students in the field, with access to modern genetic, genomic, cellular, and molecular approaches to the study of biology. The curriculum establishes a solid foundation in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and mathematics, along with robust research projects.

The degree in genomics and molecular genetics program at Florida Tech concentrates on understanding the interactions between DNA, RNA, proteins in cells, and molecular genetics in an interdisciplinary field that reveals how life functions at both the molecular and organismal level.

The science and pre-veterinary medical concentration is specifically designed for students interested in graduate school, professional training, or technical positions after the undergraduate degree. It is intended to satisfy most entrance requirements to post-graduate programs and emphasizes basic science courses. The concentration enables a student to complete all of the pre-veterinary science requirements while working towards a B.S. degree.

The Molecular Biology major trains students at the nexus of genetics, development, and disease, equipping them to manipulate and analyze genes and their protein products using cutting-edge molecular technologies. Advising tracks help you specialize for immediate employment in biotech or for graduate programs in medicine, biomedical research, genetic counseling, or molecular ecology.  This major integrates studies in biology and chemistry for a strong foundation in the structure and function of macromolecules and an understanding of fundamental molecular processes of life. A common core of foundational courses from the traditional disciplines of chemistry and biology prepares the student for advanced coursework. Supporting courses in mathematics and physics are included in the major. The Jordan Science Center together with the Kline Hall of Science offers well-equipped laboratories, research facilities, computer facilities, much instrumentation including Real-time PCR machines, a scanning electron microscope, an NMR and an HPLC. Computers and specialized software allow the student to visualize complex molecular structures such as proteins and DNA or to simulate experiments to compare with results obtained in the laboratory.

Medical technology (MEDT) is a health-care profession in which medical technologists (medical laboratory scientists) perform laboratory procedures used for the promotion of health and the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of diseases. Technical skills needed to carry out the tasks include microscopy, venipuncture, manipulation of various labware and operation of automated instruments. Results of these procedures are essential to the delivery of quality health care. The field is broad and involves several disciplines: chemistry, hematology, immunohematology (blood banking), immunology, and microbiology.

Medical technology is a constantly evolving profession. Advances in healthcare and new career opportunities have fueled the demand for medical laboratory scientists. Employment opportunities are in hospitals, physician’s offices, reference labs, DNA labs, research, veterinary clinics, and other labs. Education and training in medical technology also enables graduates to pursue careers as physicians, forensic scientists, researchers, educators, health administrators, consultants, and many more.

The Molecular Biology B.S. degree program builds on basic sciences with courses focusing on molecular, cellular, genetic and microbiological principles. Research opportunities prepare students for postgraduate studies in research and health sciences.

Healthcare professionals (physicians, nurses, psychotherapists, occupational therapists, biomedical engineers, language pathologists, etc.) must be able to relate to patients on a human level - morally, by being sympathetic or empathetic; interpersonally, by being able to elicit appropriate responses and communicate effectively; and creatively, in their ability to analyze patients' symptoms and conditions to effectively diagnose and recommend treatment. The Wilkes Honors College's undergraduate concentration in Medical Humanities is predicated on the notion that these skills should be developed and honed throughout a students' academic career prior to entering the health care profession. As an undergraduate, interdisciplinary program, the Medical Humanities concentration is founded on the notion that a pre-med or healthcare curriculum can be enhanced by integrating into those curriculum elements of the arts, humanities, and sciences that provide valuable insight into human nature, the human condition, the nature of understanding, and creative discovery. For this reason, the Honors College interprets the Medical Humanities broadly to include, and indeed require, multiple disciplines of study. Such a broad-based education assists students in becoming more observant and reflective, and trains them in multiple methodologies, all of which help to promote integrity, ethics, and humane, holistic approaches to public health and healthcare.

The Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS) Bachelor of Science degree program is designed to provide a broad background to develop the scientific and psychosocial knowledge, and an understanding of the healthcare team and the healthcare system. So that students may pursue their specialized and professional interests, three (3) interdisciplinary majors are offered: Clinical Professions; Community Patient Care; and Health Management, Policy and Information. The IMS Degree Program’s rigorous science core curriculum, individualized advising, experiential service learning, and developmental seminar and capstone course sequence enable students to reach their potential academically and personally, to determine a career path best suited for them, and to develop the skills, attitudes, and acumen to attain their career goals.
