The Accounting program provides a learning environment in which students acquire conceptual and technical knowledge in the accounting and business areas as well as other essential capabilities for a successful accounting career. The undergraduate accounting curriculum is designed to enable students to:

1.  effectively develop, measure, analyze, validate, and communicate financial and other information
2.  understand the concepts and methods of economics, finance, marketing, quantitative methods, management, and information systems
3.  develop skills, competencies and learning capacities that are essential for a broad education

Graduates should have an excellent foundation for careers in business, accounting and professional accounting.  A student who plans to become licensed as a certified public accountant in North Carolina must complete an additional 30 credit hours of academic study beyond the undergraduate accounting education.  A student can meet this requirement by completing the Master of Accountancy program (MAcc).  For details on the MAcc, please see the UNC Charlotte Graduate Catalog.

This Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Art provides in-depth study in the concentration area.  Because it requires 79 credit hours of courses within the Department of Art and Art History, and because many of the concentration courses are sequential, it is important to begin taking three studio art courses and one art history course during the first semester of study.  Students should not complete the General Education courses before beginning the courses in the major.  This will delay time to graduation.  Four-year schedules differ for each concentration and are available online or in the departmental office.

A Major in Business Analytics (BUAY) involves collecting and analyzing data using computational, statistical, and mathematical models and methods to achieve competitive advantage through better decisions in uncertain business environments.  The BUAY major prepares graduates for jobs involving data-driven business intelligence, decision models, and big data analytics and for graduate education in Data Science and Business Analytics, Supply Chain Management, Mathematical Finance, Marketing, and Economics.

Students who plan to pursue careers in business-related fields such as banking, finance, and international commerce, or who plan to enter an MBA program, are encouraged to elect the BSBA in Finance with a Concentration in Finance.

The Department of Finance prepares students for financial leadership within organizations and provides them with an understanding of the legal environment in which these organizations operate. In the Department’s various programs, students acquire knowledge that enables them to understand:

1. the concepts, processes, and institutions involved in planning for, acquiring and allocating capital with respect to modern business organizations
2. the economic and legal environment of organizations, and the myriad social and political influences on business
3. the concepts and methods of economics, accounting, mathematics, management, information systems, and business law

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degree with a Major in Finance must select one of four concentrations: Finance, Finance and Accounting, Real Estate, or Risk Management and Insurance.

The Finance & Risk Management Insurance major applies theory to practice using principles of finance, law and mathematics in the transfer and reduction of risk for individuals, corporations and government.

The Health Systems Management major prepares students to be entry-level generalists in the health systems management field through interdisciplinary approaches guided by culturally relevant perspectives.

Medical and health systems manager positions entail planning, directing, or coordinating medical and health services in hospitals, clinics, managed care organizations, public health agencies, or similar organizations.  Health systems managers may be involved within an entire facility, or specialize in a specific clinical area or department, or a medical practice for a group of physicians and healthcare professionals.  Medical and health services managers work within healthcare facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, and group practices and must be adaptable to changes in healthcare laws, regulations, and technology.

Educational Objectives:

• Students will characterize the healthcare system and environment in which healthcare providers and professionals function.
• Students will apply healthcare technology applications and quality management within health and human services systems.
• Students will be able to communicate clearly through written and oral means to establish, maintain, and facilitate constructive interactions within the health and human services environment.
• Students will have foundational skills in leadership to promote organizational excellence, manage change within an organization, and understand the importance of a shared vision to meet an organization’s overall mission.
• Students will align their personal and professional conduct in accordance with ethical and professional standards.

The primary objective of the International Business major is to provide an understanding of the importance of a global perspective on the part of business managers.  The major provides an integrated framework for the study of the market environment in which international business firms operate and the impact of those environments upon managerial decision making.  Possible careers may result in a variety of business and government sectors-either domestically or abroad.

The Human Resources Department maintains responsibility for the development and execution of all policies, programs, and strategies designed to recruit, assist, motivate, develop, promote, compensate, reward, and retain the best qualified employees while supporting continued University growth with a focus on cultivating a diverse workforce. In addition, Human Resources identifies and provides students with meaningful, and developmental, on-campus employment opportunities.

The study of Management focuses on how individuals and groups function within organizations and how organizations interact with their environment.  Managers plan, organize, lead, and control resources to achieve organizational  objectives through people. Students learn the fundamental concepts of teamwork, leadership, communication and ethics.  Career opportunities include: Business Analyst, Consultant, Entrepreneur, Personnel Manager, Project Manager, Purchasing Agent, Recruiter, Restaurant/Hotel Manager, Sales Manager, and Securities Trader.

This concentration is designed for students with an interest in “quantitative” marketing.

This concentration is designed for students with an interest in “strategic and behavioral” marketing.

A Major in Operations and Supply Management (OSCM) focuses on the efficient use of resources to provide quality goods and services. OSCM enables students to pursue such careers in supply chain management, production planning, project management, quality assurance, and operations.  Environments in which OSCM graduates are in high demand include health care, government, manufacturing, and service industries.

The primary objective of graduate study in business is to develop candidates for leadership positions in complex organizations. The MBA program focuses on developing the expertise to lead, influence, and persuade others through effective written and spoken communications; the ability to approach complex problems both systematically and imaginatively; the confidence to make decisions in the face of imperfect information, competing objectives, and technological change; the insight to recognize the ethical dimensions of organizational and individual decisions; the sensitivity to recognize that organizational decisions involve teamwork and consensus-building across diverse groups of individuals; and the awareness that business represents an inherently multinational enterprise that exists without geographical or cultural boundaries.

The Master of Science in Fire Protection and Safety Management program provides an advanced technical background for safety professionals involved with fire protection / administration in areas such as fire protection analysis and design, fire service, and fire safety and security, as well as safety management, occupational safety, industrial hazards and safety, industrial hygiene, and related areas.  The Fire Protection and Safety Management program is designed to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to begin work in many areas of the fire protection and occupational health and safety fields, and to solve safety problems in a complex technical society.

The program consists of a common core addressing basics of fire protection and safety management with the balance of coursework allowing students to specialize in fire protection, administration or safety management.  Fire Protection coursework prepares fire protection professionals to use modern fire protection methodologies, techniques, and tools for fire protection design, fire investigation, industrial fire safety, key infrastructure security, safety assessment, and other fire safety related matters.  Fire Administration coursework prepares those who are engaged in occupations in the fire, emergency services, and safety fields to effectively manage the administrative decision making requirements of both public and private entities.  Safety Management coursework prepares professionals to evaluate industrial hazards, assess risk and develop safety management plans while addressing industrial hygiene, environmental pollution control, ergonomics, and human factors. 

The Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte, in partnership with the Graduate School of Business Administration and Leadership (EGADE) at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico, offers a dual degree Master’s program.  Students earn two MBA degrees: one from UNC Charlotte and one from Tecnológico de Monterrey.  Students also receive a Graduate Certificate in Global Business and Strategy jointly issued from EGADE and the Belk College of Business.  The program is taught in English in Monterrey, Mexico.  Students in the program have the option of taking one semester at the Belk College of Business in Charlotte, NC.  Visit globalbusiness.uncc.edu for additional information.

The UNC Charlotte Master of Health Administration (MHA) program leverages its position within the Department of Public Health Sciences of North Carolina’s Urban Research University to prepare national and international students to advance the public’s health through competent leadership and management of healthcare organizations and systems.

The mission is pursued through education, research, and service efforts that:

1. Provide qualified and motivated students from a variety of disciplines, levels of experience, and backgrounds - with a special emphasis on individuals and groups historically underrepresented in graduate education - the knowledge, skills, and abilities to become effective administrators and stewards of a dynamic health and healthcare system
2. Contribute to the body of knowledge related to the design, organization and delivery, evaluation, and leadership of health and healthcare systems
3. Apply expertise to support health leaders and the communities they serve in advancing the public’s health

This dual degree program allows students to earn both a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Belk College of Business and a Master of Health Administration (MHA) degree from the College of Health and Human Services.

Applicants might be offered admission into only the MHA or MBA instead of the dual program. Similarly, students admitted into the dual program may opt to matriculate into only the MHA or MBA program. Students who have matriculated into either the MHA or MBA program who desire to add the dual degree must apply and gain admission to the dual degree no later than the end of their first semester of matriculation into either program.

The Master of Health Administration (MHA) and Professional Science Master’s in Health Informatics and Analytics (HIA PSM) dual degree program allows students to earn both a Master of Health Administration and a M.S. in Health Informatics and Analytics degree.  The MHA and HIA PSM dual degree program (outlined below) consists of 66 credit hours of coursework, in contrast to the 87 credit hours required if these degrees were pursued separately.

The Master of Science in Management is a full-time, one-year, 30 credit hour program.  The fifth-year M.S. in Management program is designed for recent graduates without a business background who are interested in gaining marketable skills in functional areas of business.  The curriculum provides students with a comprehensive overview of key business topics, making graduates marketable in today’s business world.  Students learn the fundamentals of business in areas such as finance, business analytics, marketing, operations, accounting, economics, information technology, ethics, organizational behavior, and leadership.
