The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is a premier metropolitan research university. UNLV is originally a public land-grant research university which is situated in Paradise, Nevada. One of the main USPs of this university for which it is mostly known is its Men’s Basketball Program. Another major USP of this university is to “provide access to world-class educational experiences that are responsive to the needs of our students and stakeholders”. A third USP is that it “engages in groundbreaking research, scholarship, professional, and creative activitie that have impact and cross boundaries; and offers high-value, cutting-edge interdisciplinary physical and mental health care to support its community”.One of the major USPs of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas is its Men’s Basketball Program for which it is mostly known. Accreditation, Number of Students and Faculties

The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities accredits the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The international programs of UNLV have been accredited by the Council on International Education Exchange. Some of the specialised programs of UNLV are accredited by other accrediting bodies. The total enrollment of the university as of Fall 2021 was 30,679 out of which 25,412 were enrolled in undergraduate programs, 4,237 were enrolled in graduate programs and 1,054 were enrolled in professional programs. The gender distribution of the university was 57.3% female and 42.7% male. 86% of the students are Nevadans. There are more than 3,900 faculty and staff members in this university. 

University Campus, Facilities, Labs and Courses

There are several core laboratories and facilities within the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Besides the flexible laboratory spaces, there is a Science and Engineering building in the campus which offers specialised equipment and laboratories that facilitate innovative and cutting-edge research facilities across the various departments of the university. Some of the facilities and laboratories of the university which are worth mentioning are Genomics Core Facility, Confocal and Biological Imaging core, GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Greenhouse, Imaging and Electron Microanalysis suite, Isotope Science Laboratory, Nanotechnology Clean room, Machine Shop, Tissue Culture Laboratory, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Laboratory. 

Streams, Number of Courses and Other Offerings

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers 68 minor programs and 80 major programs besides other specialised courses. UNLV also offers more than 175 certificate and graduate degree programs for professionals who are required to obtain multiple degrees. This university also has its own dental medicine, medicine and law schools. Some of the courses that are taught in this university are Arts and Humanities, Physical Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Business and Economics, Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Education, Computer Science, Psychology, Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health, and Law. The admissions at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas is less selective with an acceptance rate of 83% as of Fall 2021. Previously, UNLV had an acceptance rate of 81% in 2020. 

Admission Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate admission

  • Applicants must secure a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in 13 core units
  • English- 4
  • Social Sciences- 3
  • Maths- 3
  • Natural Sciences- 3

or, 

  • Applicants must secure a minimum ACT composite score of 22

or, 

  • Applicants must secure a total SAT score of 1120 (1040 in case the exam was taken prior to 2016)

or, 

  • Nevada Advanced High School Diploma. 

Graduate admission

  • The applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree from an institution which is regionally accredited or its approved equivalent. 
  • The applicant must secure a GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale on the bachelor’s degree or 3.00 on a 4.0 scale on the last two semesters. 
  • Some academic departments may require test scores such as GMAT or GRE.
