East Carolina's graduate degree in criminal justice gives students the opportunity to tailor their studies to their individual applied or academic interests. The master's program provides extraordinary learning and leadership opportunities with the national criminal justice honor society, field experience, international study abroad, independent study or research with faculty mentors, and graduate assistantships.

Students in CRCJ take a scientific approach to understanding the correlates of crime, characteristics of victims and offenders, and the behavior of the criminal justice system (cops, courts, and corrections). They will also develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Our department has a tradition of producing graduates poised for important leadership roles in the criminal justice system at the local, state, and federal levels. Students will learn:

• All three major components of the criminal justice system: cops, courts, and corrections
• Criminal investigation, including theory and history, conduct at crime scenes, sources of information, collection and preservation of evidence
• Processes involved in the criminal justice system; the rules of evidence, laws of arrest search and seizure, and the judicial process from offense to conviction
• Use of forensic science methods for crime scene investigation
  • Case and trial preparation

The University offers a bachelor of science (BS) in criminology and criminal justice.

The Criminology and Criminal Justice Program prepares students for careers in the fields of corrections, law enforcement, juvenile justice, and private security—and in other areas ranging from private security management to private investigation.

The program provides students with a rewarding academic experience in and out of the classroom.

• Coursework in the major covers the criminal justice system, criminal behavior, criminal law, criminal justice administration, and the relationship of these topics to the larger society.
• Specialized courses (or symposia) are offered to address specific needs and interests in areas such as homicide investigation, terrorism, and women and minorities in the criminal justice system.
• In addition, all students participate in internships with criminal justice agencies. These internships provide real-work experiences that can lead to jobs in the field following graduation.
