Civil Engineering MS Non Thesis at University of Maine

The Texas Tech University Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering has earned international prominence in several areas. Traditionally, one of the broadest of engineering disciplines, Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering at Texas Tech has recently expanded its curriculum to encompass even more academic options in response to societal needs. In addition to the bachelor's degree based on structural, environmental, geotechnical, transportation, construction, and water resources, students now have opportunities for course work and research experience leading to masters and doctoral degrees in civil engineering, a master's degree in environmental engineering, and a graduate certificate in construction engineering and management. The Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering Building houses excellent laboratories, classrooms, and computer facilities for teaching and research.

The Construction Engineering BS program is a broad based curriculum designed to prepare its graduates to enter into a wide range of positions in the construction industry. It is composed of 128 semester credit hours of course work, including a required internship.

To enable the CONE graduate to be successful, the curriculum is designed to assure that at the time of graduation, the CONE graduate is able:

• To design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
• To design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.

• To have an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
• To communicate effectively.
• To have a broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.

• To have a knowledge of contemporary issues.
• To use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Civil engineering evolved as a formal discipline at the start of the 19th century as a response to society's needs for increased mobility and convenience. Today's civil engineers deal primarily with public and private infrastructure and its relation to the environment, which includes planning, design, construction, and maintenance of transportation systems, bridges, dams, buildings, water supply/distribution/treatment systems, wastewater and storm water collection/treatment/disposal systems, irrigation systems, and flood control. Civil engineers also operate public and private works, and design environmental protection for water, air, and land.
