Dental Hygiene (BS) at Minnesota State University

The postgraduate diploma in Operative Dentistry is designed to enhance the operative skills of newly-qualified dentists, as well as experienced practitioners wishing to upskill, whilst they continue to work in general dental practice. Course participants will develop the technical, diagnostic and treatment planning skills necessary to practice modern clinical operative dentistry effectively and efficiently. Topics covered will include the comprehensive management of single and multiple crown/onlay restorations, treatment planning, aesthetic composite restorations, occlusion, dental implants, resin bonded tooth replacement, removable prosthodontics, tooth surface loss, bleaching, rotary endodontics, restoring the endodontically treated tooth and the development of a variety of complementary skills.

The two-year, part-time, postgraduate diploma in Endodontics aims to enhance the endodontic skills of newly qualified dentists and experienced practitioners. It will develop their technical, diagnostic and treatment planning skills necessary to practice modern clinical endodontics. This will be facilitated by hands-on patient treatment sessions under close supervision and laboratory sessions. Seminars will serve to increase the knowledge and understanding of the scientific basis of endodontics and to enable them to use evidence-based dentistry in clinical endodontics.

The SIU School of Dental Medicine in Alton, Ill., offers a four-year academic program that awards the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). The mission of the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine is to educate dentists and improve the oral health of the region through patient care, research/scholarship and service. In addition to classroom, clinical, and research facilities, the School has recently opened a new multidisciplinary, preclinical simulation laboratory. The use of this facility will enhance the student's preparation to be outstanding healthcare providers. The School also has broad capabilities in microscopy, including scanning electron microscopy and confocal microscopy, as well as other sophisticated equipment with which to conduct biomedical research. Patient care is provided in state-of-the-art clinical facilities at the Alton campus and the East St. Louis Center.
