More About Johns Hopkins University

Acceptance rate

Studying at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University is a thing of pride. Given the volume of applications that come in each year and the excellence expected from each aspirant, it's no wonder the university is selective in its admissions.

Johns Hopkins university's acceptance rate is a meager 8%.

This inadvertently means that students would have to produce outstanding academic records, good SAT and ACT scores, impressive extracurricular history, etc.

Undergraduate acceptance rate

Regarding the university's acceptance rate, let's look at the detailed information.

As per the university, 38,513 students applied for the undergraduate class of 2025. Out of the vast number of applicants, only 1,338 students made it to the cut-off. That’s an abysmal 3.47% acceptance rate.

Admission eligibility criteria

Before applying to any university, it's highly significant to double-check the eligibility stipulated by the school.

Johns Hopkins University is an excellent institute, shaping enthusiastic young minds and turning them into bright scholars. Knowing how to get admission to Johns Hopkins University will be a huge step forward in the right direction.

So, to be eligible to get admitted to the university, the students must fulfill the following Johns Hopkins University admission criteria!

  • Only applications that the university will accept must be via the Common Application or Apply Coalition on Scoir
  • Students can attach additional questions or supplement with the application
  • They must display remarkable high school profile
  • SAT, AP, ACT, IB, and English language proficiency tests are encouraged
  • Mid-year report is required

Documents required

Every applicant is required to attach the list of the following documents with their application. In cases where the records are not provided, the application will be considered incomplete.

  • Transcripts of high school grades
  • Recommendation by the school counselor
  • Evaluations by minimum 2 teachers who can offer genuine insight about the student and their work
  • Results of the ACT, SAT, IB, AP, English language proficiency tests, etc.
  • Mid-year report with an updated transcript from senior year
  • Supplementary documents like a link to previous work, research abstract, art, photography, etc. (only submit it as long as they genuinely contribute to the application!)

Applications for John Hoping University are often sent via Common Application or Apply Application on Scoir. So, besides all the demands listed above, Common Application demands certain materials like,

  • List of work and activities done outside the classroom. This can include hobbies, work, community engagement, and clubs.
  • Self-report grades of any standardized tests
  • Information about parent or guardian
  • Academic achievements and honors
  • Writing supplements like essay

Tests required

While not compulsory in the Johns Hopkins admission requirements, the university encourages students to self-report scores on standardized tests. These include the ACT or SAT scores.

The applicants must state the highest grade in each section, and the university will calculate the final score during the application review.

Additionally, the university does not mind students updating their SAT scores for different sections taken on different dates. As long as the test scores are high, they are recommended to report them!

Then, there comes the English proficiency test!

Students with no background in the English language or who have not attended school with English as their instruction language in the last 3 years need to prove their fluency in the language.

Moreover, applicants with scores less than 30 in ACT English and reading sections or less than 690 in the SAT reading and writing section must also pass English proficiency exams.

The university accepts IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English Exam, or the Duolingo English Test.

The minimum scores required in each of these exams are as follows:

  • IELTS: Higher than 7 on each band
  • TOEFL (internet-based): Minimum 100 with 22 in Writing, 25 in Speaking, 26 in Listening, and 26 in Reading

How university evaluates applicants

There are several yardsticks on which the university adjudges every application.

The admissions committee is looking for individuals with self-assured academic spirits. They will assess standardized tests, check academic recommendations, and evaluate transcripts.

The three core qualities that the university is scouting for are:

  • Academic character: The university looks for an applicant with various intellectual passions and the zest to achieve them. If the student seems even moderately disinterested in the program chosen by them, it might act as a disadvantage.
  • Personal contributions: The university wants to enroll passionate students in community engagement. This can be in social, academic, or personal terms. If the student is excited about joining hands with the campus community and eager to further their extra-curricular interests, it's a big plus!
  • Initiative and impact: The third most crucial basis for consideration is the quality of their academic references and recommendations. These references must give insight into the student and their out-of-the-class commitments and contribution to the previous campus.

The university also critically analyses the supplementary essay question answered by the student along with their application. This must clearly and concisely offer an answer about the person’s competencies and aspirations in particular.

Tips for applying to university

Fulfilling Johns Hopkins admission criteria does not afford any student a foolproof guarantee of admission to the university. It takes a lot more than just doing the bare minimum!

Here are some solid tips and advice that will positively help the applicants strengthen their chance of getting into Johns Hopkins University-

  • Keep GPA aim at a minimum of 3.9 scores. If schools believe in ranking, applicants must be in the top 10% of their class.
  • Attaining straight A’s is fancy but taking up the most challenging class available is even better. It shows grit and determination.
  • Create a goal for the SATs and ACTs. A minimum of 35 scores on ACT and 1550 on SAT is ideal.
  • Cream of the crop universities like Johns Hopkins have a bifurcated tier system that helps them divide the extra-curricular into different levels. The first tier is for unique and highly specialized activities like doing independent research at a national level. Tier 2 is for activities that are exceptional yet more common than activities in tier 1, such as winning some music competitions state-wide. Tier 3 is for modest achievements like assuming casual leadership roles in school activities. Lastly, tier 4 is for activities commonly noted in applications like volunteering. It'd be best to focus on tier 1 and tier 2 activities!
  • Johns Hopkins is a game-changer in the field of research. It values independent thinkers that are committed to running independent studies. So, if possible, applicants should be involved in research projects – it would boost their resume!
  • Writing an engaging essay that gives the admission committee insight into the applicant’s personality is a great weapon. Use it wisely!
  • Applying in the early decision round gives an edge over applicants applying during the regular cycle.

Application deadlines

If applying for an undergraduate program, keep note of the following important deadlines:

  • For early decision I applicants: November 1
  • For early decision II applicants: January 3
  • For regular decision applicant: January 3

For students applying for a master's or doctoral program, December 1 is the deadline. If a program does not have a December 1 deadline, then such an application runs on a rolling basis, subject to availability.
