The Health Systems Engineering (HSE) concentration supplements traditional degree programs in Computer Science, Data Science, and Business Analytics with application examples based on the challenging problems in the healthcare industry. The concentration is grounded in the fundamentals of systems engineering and analytics, and focuses on process improvement, health informatics, health care systems modeling, and healthcare decision making.

Intelligent Mobility uses data and technology to connect people, places, and goods across all transportation modes. Growth in intelligent mobility will transform the way people travel, interact with their environment, and connect goods and services.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management is the coordination of all logistical functions in an enterprise including acquisition, handling, the internal allocation of resources, delivery, and output. Students develop knowledge of the business and technical aspects of managing large-scale delivery operations. The expert in Logistics/Supply Chain Management optimizes these complex networks to ensure efficiency and satisfaction.

Quantitative Economics and Econometrics focuses on quantitative analysis and rigorous modeling of economic phenomena. This includes analysis of individual and firm decisions when data is messy, incomplete, or otherwise imperfect, analysis of strategic situations, and analysis of market outcomes and trends. Training in Quantitative Economics and Econometrics hones critical reasoning skills and prepares students for analytical careers or for graduate or professional study. 

With the increasing footprint of networked businesses, embedded computers, and global conflict, the demand is increasing for individuals to help protect and monitor security measures against hackers and breaches. The cybersecurity concentration focuses on information assurance and computer security and will provide you with hands-on experience designing systems and strategies for safeguarding information. 

Software engineers apply the principles of effective management of software teams. This growing field includes orchestration of application software engineers who create and maintain computer applications, and systems software engineers who analyze the client’s technical needs and develop and maintain optimal solutions. Because nearly all employment sectors rely on complex software solutions, software engineering is one of the fastest-growing occupations in the world. 

Cybersecurity Engineering is a high-quality program focused on education, professional development, and research to prepare outstanding cybersecurity engineering graduates and to provide service to the community. The program is interdisciplinary and encompasses a range of disciplines including computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, engineering, science, and mathematics. The program educates students in the fundamental core of cybersecurity engineering of physical systems and its cutting-edge, high-impact areas focusing on industrial plans, smart-grid and hardware security.

Students can design their own four-course concentration within the major based on their personal academic and professional pursuits. This unique combination of courses works in concert with other co- and extra-curricular activities, including research experiences, internships, and a wide variety of opportunities in our student organizations. Advanced Topics offers the student the flexibility in curriculum choices to grow with their changing interests as they look forward to graduation, graduate school, and their professional endeavors.

Hardware security involves hardware design, access control, secure multi-party computation, secure key storage, ensuring code authenticity, and measures to ensure that the components and the systems that built the product are secure, among other things. This concentration prepares students in the fundamentals of hardware security, the different security threats across both circuit and microarchitecture levels in the modern electronic hardware designs, and different hardware security methods. Students will gain in-depth knowledge by applying the theoretical concepts on practical case studies through project-based curriculum.

This concentration covers emerging topics in both the autonomous system and the electric vehicle system. It requires two courses on autonomous vehicle systems and two courses on electric vehicle systems. The autonomous vehicle system covers the software and hardware architectures of the autonomous driving, vehicle dynamics system and modeling, different sensors used for autonomous driving and techniques for sensor fusion to define vehicle localization, and environment perception. An advanced course covers computer vision methods for detection, control and motion planning in autonomous vehicles, and connected vehicles concepts. The electric vehicle system covers the modeling and control of electric motors, and the hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), including architecture, sub-system design, and sizing, modeling, and energy management strategies. It also covers vehicle dynamics along with energy storage, and power electronics utilized in HEVs as well as the environmental and economic impacts and current limitations of HEVs.

This concentration focuses on project-based and intensive courses grounded in robotics, autonomy, real-time operating systems, and systems engineering, and includes methods to analyze, model, and control robotic mechanisms in the fundamentals of kinematics, dynamics and the design and implementation of motion trajectory planning algorithms. Additional topics include state estimation and dynamic parameter identification of a robotic system. Students will learn about embedded systems control, computer vision, localization and planning, mapping algorithms, and sensor integration into real-time operating systems. Students design, assemble, and program a scale-model autonomous, self-driving vehicle. The concentration will also provide the theoretical and practical basis required for understanding Digital Image Processing fundamentals and their applications on gray and colored images as it relates to autonomous robotic programming. 

Industrial Control Systems (ICS) usually adopt Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and other control system configurations such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), while addressing their unique performance, reliability, and safety requirements. Industrial Control Systems (ICS) support critical infrastructure, and the need for security within these systems is critical. This concentration provides students valuable insights into the necessity and structure of ICS Security concepts, standards, regulations, and frameworks.

The smart grid is a digital infrastructure that sits on top of the already existing electrical grid. This serves to monitor grid conditions and energy consumption and generation, as well as automate many of its operations. The Smart Grid allows operators to be proactive in the detection of generation, transmission, and distribution problems to isolate the problem areas, and to prevent cascading power outages. The smart grid consists of power and power electronics systems and components, telecommunication systems, and common operating systems. The smart grid is therefore exposed to several types of risks, including the typical risks listed below. This concentration covers an overview of smart grid infrastructure, and management policy, including the integration of renewable resources, electricity market, demand-side management, and privacy. 

The Digital Logic Design program provides students with a strong foundation in logic principles, practical experience in programming digital circuits and hands-on training in electrical component integration for a high-powered career in high tech. 

Embedded systems are designed to handle a particular task within a larger mechanical or electrical system. These complex systems are everywhere—in hybrid vehicles, aircraft, medical devices, traffic lights, factories, automobiles, communication switching systems, biomedical instruments, industrial robots, household appliances, and video game consoles.

The field of Machine Intelligence involves the disciplines of advanced machine learning, reasoning and self-correction, as well as the abilities of machines to perceive, move, manipulate, and communicate. Graduates will be prepared for a career in machine intelligence where they will develop programming strategies for machine learning and pattern recognition. 

Computer Engineering combines the hardware background and aptitude of electrical engineering with the firmware and software writing skills of computer science. Computer engineers design and build embedded microcontrollers, VLSI chips, analog sensors, mixed signal circuit boards, and operating systems — and guide how these parts integrate into the larger picture.

The B.S. in Environmental Engineering applies principles from all of the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, geology, and biology) to help you tackle interconnected challenges as they relate to water, energy, air quality, and related fields.
