It also has a U.S. News ranking of 24 in Regional Universities West (2022-23). The academic roots of this university date back to 1881, when it began as a teachers' college. The institution was known then as the California State Normal School. This school was officially absorbed into the California State University in 1919. For this reason, this university has the second oldest campus in the whole of California. This university offers nearly 337 courses in varied disciplines.
