Ball State is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. From data since Fall 2020, total enrollment was 21,597 students, including 15,205 undergraduates and 5,817 postgraduates. Ball State athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are known as the Ball State Cardinals. The university is a member of the Mid-American Conference and the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. In Fall 2020, the university formed a varsity esports team and joined the Esports Collegiate Conference. the university's earliest academic buildings, Christy Woods, and the Wheeler-Thanhauser Orchid Collection and Species Bank. The university aims at environment sustainability and contributes greatly to the surrounding environment to preserve the local nature and flora and fauna.

Ball State University gives to its students undergraduate education in professional studies and liberal arts. The university offers about 120 undergraduate majors and 130 minor areas of study and more than 100 master's, doctoral, certificate, and specialist degrees.

Freshman requirements
- Strength of curriculum (including the senior year),Students must have the best college preparatory curriculum available. For Indiana applicants, Ball State asks for completion of the academic component of the Core 40 curriculum as the minimum preparation for students who are college bound, however, completion of the Academic Honors Diploma is strongly encouraged. Students from other states should pursue a strong college curriculum.
- Performance as measured by grades in English, mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II are minimum requirements), laboratory sciences, social sciences, and foreign languages and overall high school GPA.

- Standardized test scores, SAT and/or ACT scores are not required for admissions to Ball State. Students who believe that their SAT and/or ACT scores are a positive addition to their academic record should submit their test scores.
