About the Arizona State UniversityArizona State University (ASU) was established as the Territorial Normal School, the first higher-education institution in the Arizona state that opened on February 8, 1886, with just 33 students at Tempe. The institution was later named Arizona State University in 1958, courtesy of a public voting procedure.
