Founded in 1885 as Edge Hill College in—the first nondenominational teacher training institution for women in England—Edge Hill University is a public university situated on a campus in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England. It began accepting male students in 1959. The Privy Council granted Edge Hill the authority to award taught degrees in 2005, and on May 18, 2006, Edge Hill University was established.

The University offers undergraduate and graduate courses through its three faculties: Arts and Sciences, Education, and Health and Social Care.

The 160-acre campus of Edge Hill University is located in Ormskirk, West Lancashire's administrative hub. Preston, the county seat, and Liverpool are both halfway between. Formerly, the university was housed at the Woodlands campus in Chorley, central Lancashire, where it provided part-time study options and programs for ongoing professional development. Operations have, however, recently been recentralized to the university's main campus.

Undergraduate programs offered by Edge Hill University include BA/BSc and LLB degrees, as well as degrees in teacher preparation and health pre-registration. PGCEs, Masters degrees, MBAs, MPhil and PhD research degrees, and MRes programs are examples of postgraduate offerings. The Higher Education Statistical Agency reports that there were 3,535 postgraduate students and 10,025 undergraduate students enrolled in the 2019–20 academic year. It's possible that the figures don't include foreign students.
