Bishop’s University Canadawas founded in 1843 through an Act of Parliament, and a site of 40 acres was chosen, which was donated by Lt. Colonel William Morris.In 1845, the Reverend Jasper Hume Nicolls was appointed the first principal of the college. He graduated from Oriel College at the University of Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts.In 1853, along with Bishop Mountain, he was instrumental in obtaining th Royal Charter, which raised the college to the status of a university.
