It is ranked 185 in the QS World Rankings 2023 and 201-250th in THE World Rankings 2022 list. The New South Wales University of Technology set up a division in 1951 at Wollongong. It became the Wollongong College of the university after that.The institution officially became the University of Wollongong in 1975. It merged with the Wollongong Institute of Higher Education in 1982. In addition to the main Wollongong campus, the University of Wollongong has campuses in Sydney and other regional cities such as Batemans Bay and Bega. It has about ten campuses in all. One of Australia's most attractive campuses is the one in Wollongong. The innovation campus is just under two km away from this campus.

The UAE, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia all host UOW foreign campuses. The campus is home to a wide variety of cafes, food courts, gyms, and dorms for students. Some of its scientific facilities are Molecular Horizons and the SMART Infrastructure Facility.
