History of the Swinburne University of Technology

The Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, was founded in 1908 by Honourable George and Ethel Swinburne. The university aimed to provide technical education to the section that was denied further education. In its early days, the courses offered were woodwork, science, and mathematics. Swinburne started offering degrees in engineering, accounting, chemistry, and arts from the 1970s and on July 1, 1992, Swinburne gained university status by an Act of the Victorian Parliament.
