Appalachian State University’s Career and Technical Education (BS) concentration in workforce leadership and development is a broad and flexible program designed for students who are interested in combining technical skills with the business preparation needed to advance into management or the training of employees within a particular industry. It does not lead to teaching licensure, as do other CTE concentrations at Appalachian.

The program offers a distinctive combination of career and technical courses, workforce courses, business foundations — such as accounting, marketing, law and organization behavior, and an internship. It develops the “hard” and “soft” skills needed to improve your competitiveness in the workforce.

The program is designed to accommodate the needs of both transfer students, who may already have earned an associate degree and have work experience in a particular business or industry, and traditional students just beginning their postsecondary education. It is offered both online and on campus.

Public awareness of the importance of early childhood education is growing, and there has been a call at the state and national level to increase funding for early childhood. Students who choose the Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development (BS) - Birth through Kindergarten (licensure) at Appalachian State University will receive a North Carolina Birth through Kindergarten (BK) teacher licensure. This licensure is a dual certification in both regular and special education.

The major focuses on children ages birth to five years and their families. Graduates can work in a North Carolina public school pre-K or kindergarten. Licensure professionals also can work in non-school settings and agencies with children and families, creating supportive environments for children and families that will assist professionals who work directly with families and family service agencies.

Five required field experiences develop students’ professional skills so they are ready for the workplace.

The Sustainable Development (BS) - Community, Regional and Global Development degree examines theories and strategies for creating vibrant and sustainable communities in the U.S. and globally. You will learn to analyze how diverse social and economic systems work, the principles on which they are based, and how they affect human well-being, environments and equity. You will gain a critical understanding of social change and the skills to become a thoughtful practitioner and grounded scholar of grassroots development and social movements.

This is one of four degree options in the Department of Sustainable Development at Appalachian State University. The others are Sustainable Development (BA), Sustainable Development (BS) - Environmental Studies, and Sustainable Development (BS) - Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture.
